Province may require motorists to move over


The province is looking at amending its traffic laws to specify how much space motorists must give cyclists when passing them on the street.

Bike Winnipeg says the Highway Traffic Act is too vague and drivers should give cyclists at least one metre or pass them using the next lane over.

As this is a By-Law Issue in wpg. I've posted it here, as Rapid Transit does seem appropriate in some ways, a by-Law change fits the "other topics",Safety for cyclists, etc..

We tried, but the current moderator just seems to sweep the issue under the rug and essentially ignores it. I guess that is what passes for "moderation" in the Winnipeg threads.

Perhaps we just need to utilize the other threads in this forum better. And create a few new ones to better split up the discussion to keep things on topic. The Winnipeg construction thread has always (and probably will always) be the biggest thread that is Winnipeg related, as such a lot of off topic discussion begins here.

Some things have been done to attempt to alleviate the off topic discussion in this thread, the creation of the "Western Expresso" thread is a good place for some off topic chat.

There is a Business in Winnipeg thread but perhaps we should either rename it or create a new thread titled "Winnipeg Economics" to discuss the finances of the city (budgets, debt, so on)

Another idea for a thread would be a dedicated thread for Winnipeg/Manitoba politics. As... Heated.. as the debate in the First Nations Issue thread got at times, it really did what a forum is supposed to do, open up debate on an issue. Politics is often an issue in the construction thread.

These are just a couple thread ideas, however I think the most important thing would be for posters here to use other threads in this forum for discussion on non-construction related topics (the transit thread has been very successful and has taken almost all the rapid transit discussion out of the construction thread).
I know in the past people have complained that no one reads the other threads and that makes them fairly pointless, well I'll just be blunt about this... If no one is reading the other threads it's because no one really cares about the topic. Bringing that topic into the construction form just so people will read it isn't going to make it more popular, it will just drown out the stuff people do care about.

Yes I am aware about the irony of saying we need to use other/more threads for discussion so we keep the construction thread clean, but this is where the debate is going on so I put it here anyways. Maybe another thread could be for issues people have with the forum, since we all seem to have a lot of issues with it lately.

There are many good solutions in your post that make very good sense! It's just the will to do it. By both posters and those in charge of what's posted. Hopefully things change,so I keep positive, that's all you can do. Be patient

You are absolutely right. Thank you for pointing that out! You would think I would know better, seeing that I am operating in Québec French keyboard mode right now...

If that is because of the Windows XP SP2 and later keyboard glitch, there is actually a way to turn that off in the language and locality settings. You simply set them so that there is no key-combination toggle between the keyboard modes.

Why that is enabled by default for Canada, I don't know.
