Aside from laying power along where the guideway will be, no real work has been started yet. The whole 'construction underway!' thing is just a pre-election PR move. We won't see anything meaningful until the fall at the earliest.

It's always funny seeing people get mad that they can't get off the 160 until Inlet Drive.

I think truncating at Kootenay Loop makes more sense to start.

I think this is an experience normal to any regular 160 rider. I counted it happen no less than three ANGRY episodes of someone wanting to get off at some random stop in Burnaby, and being told that the bus was an express. Angry pounding and profanity ensured.

But boy, that sure was a handy bus for getting to my downtown job in the summer of 2006 from Clarke and Barnet Highway.

Well, I think no one was expecting the guideways to magically appear just like that. But I think we should see some large holes and some fencing this summer. Agreed that we probably won't see any rebars jutting out of the ground until fall the earliest.

There is work happening on North Road. The road has been widened and many left turn bays moved to make way for the impending piling construction. In some spots it looks like they could start any day.

Excavation is happening on the road/hill beside Barnet Highway. Eastbound lanes should be rerouted in the coming days and cut-and-cover tunnel construction under the highway should start soon after that.

Barnet Highway has been rerouted starting today. I guess this is the "official start" of guideway construction?

No Cameron station.

Burnaby Newsleader Story.Link

Here is a direct quote:

"But while the city has secured some amenities for the Evergreen SkyTrain line's Burnaby section, it was unsuccessful in its "desperate struggle" to have the preparatory work for a future Cameron Street station included, Corrigan said.

"The provincial government refused our offer to pay 50 per cent of any additional costs, making the addition of another station in the future highly unlikely.""

I know including this station was controversial. However I thought it would been a plus for the area. I'm disappointed in both sides for not finding a solution.

Thanks for the update on the Cameron issue. It is a bit disappointing.
I consider the main problem to be the centre of street allignment, requiring very tall columns (like Brentwood) to allow for a mezzanine to access a future station. It would have been much cheaper to prepare for a future station if the municipalities had agreed to place the guideway on one side of North Road rather than up the middle.

Ridiculous how they can't make an agreement on whose budget the paltry 1-2 million difference should come out of in order to secure potential for infrastructure that has a > 100-year lifespan. No wonder nothing in this region can get funded properly...

I call BS on Corrigan's statement! Mary Polak seemed so willing to get the Cameron Station going, signing off just like that on whatever deal was presented at that time, but the usual partisan crap that comes out of Derek prevailed. So ultimately, its his own fault. "Desperate struggle" my *ss!!!

The last time modern politics got into the development of transportation we saw VCC/Clark become the terminus for the Millenium Line and the Canada Line became single-track for two stations.

*There also might be some bad engineering in there too though..

Lucky they got a single track at all, given their complaining about that gawd-awful guideway, look how it's a few feet taller than the traffic lights!

Imagine if they had to swallow Millennium Line track elevations.

Derek Corrigan is so f*cked up....regarding Cameron Station.

http://www.burnabynewsleader.com/news/204310441.html

Quote:
At issue is $1.5 million, or the price of a fixer-upper in many parts of Metro Vancouver.
Quote:
"The government was prepared to cover the costs exceeding $3 million, if Burnaby paid the initial $3 million to modify the guideway to make provision for a future station. Burnaby countered by asking that the initial $3 million be shared with the government of B.C. An agreement was not reached. Subsequently, the contract was awarded and construction is now underway."

^ the key word is prepare... They had been preparing the construction at Moody Centre for more than a months now...

And speaking of construction... there's already a trench for guideway near the tunnel portal in Port Moody...

Shouldn't the thread title be changed? It's no longer just proposed. Perhaps it should say "pre-construction"

Well of course they have to prepare first. You can't exactly expect the Burquitlam station to magically appear in its completed state next week...

Start of Construction at the Evergreen Line South Tunnel Portal Area

Construction for the Evergreen Line in the south tunnel portal area is scheduled to begin in mid-May. Work will take place Monday to Saturday, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the area north of Como Lake Avenue and on the west side of Clarke Road to Kemsley Avenue in Coquitlam.
In the PDF file, it also mentions the assembly of the segment launch truss, the heavy equipment that is used to lift guideways components into position....
