Looks like the NHL will try its best to ruin the Winter/Heritage Classic next season. There are not one, not two, but six games scheduled for next year:

January 1 - TOR v DET
January 25 - ANA v LA
January 26 - NJ v NYR
January 29 - NYI v NYR
March 1 - PIT v CHI
March 2 - OTT v VAN

The reason the Winter Classic is successful is because of the novelty factor, it's an event that people look forward to. This is going to kill it.

F'ing stupid having that many outdoor games in one season. They're going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

The only explanation for having six outdoor games is that they have no intention of trying to gain national media coverage for most of them.

Market the Winter Classic Jan 1 to everyone like before.
Market the LA game only regionally.
Market the NYR games to the Superbowl crowd only - really, just to the region.
Market the Pit/CHI game nationally, but with less emphasis than the Tor/Det one. - I'm assuming this will be part of a Hockey Day in America event that NBC has been putting on.
Market the Ott/Van game to Canadians, but mostly to Vancouver.

-monthly all-star games
-bi-mon-hock-ey-cons
-a May Madness in bracket form with all 30 teams, sudden death

As long as the tickets are still sold and the TV numbers are relatively stable the outdoor games will keep coming.

An outdoor game at Dodger stadium will be a challenge to pull off.

And it's quite possible the Oilers do not win another game this season.

^ I just gave away two club seats to upcoming home game vs. Anaheim. Gave 'em away. Have no interest in watching that sad sack of a team any more this season.

I have Anaheim and the Hawks, going to go to both but going more for the heroin beer than anything.

BTW I despise shootouts, as well as overtime, especially when trying desperately to clinch a playoff spot. I was shaking for half an hour today because I was so nervous.

I was even more shocked the Bolts opted out of using their strongest shooters right away as well

Its crazy we had to win just to keep pace/status quo with every one else...hopefully this last stretch we can continue to push forward and we get some help from the hockey gods.

Meh.. I can get drunk at the End Zone on equally disgusting beer, save a few bucks and be home in my pj's & bunny slippers while you're still trying to avoid getting stabbed or thrown up on at the Collesium LRT

Having 6 outdoor games is a bad idea! the winter classic is a once a year thing, having 5 more will kill the novelty. I'm also curious why there is an outdoor game in southern California? will be a little warm for ice, no?

The same could be said for Calgary - if the chinook winds come a-blowing from the west.

Yeah if there is an extremely warm chinook that keeps the night time temps above freezing. Chances are that a chinook would warm Calgary up to 10 during the day and temperatures would go back below freezing at night. LA is usually in the high teens or low 20's in late January, and rarely goes below 10 at night. Big difference.

That's what refrigeration is for. Every arena in the league is held above 10C all the time.
