Downtown retail

Pretty grim. I was in Saint John on King st and market and brunswick square and they have some really nice high end stores. Moncton needs to stop the big box stores and promote independant retail. My friends were shocked at the lack of downtown shopping retail. Any suggestions on what type of retail to open??

The big box stores will most likely continue being developed because Moncton's suburbs are growing. It's virtually 100% of the city's growth.

In order to get downtown retail there needs to be more downtown residents. Again, Moncton needs tax reform to curb urban sprawl and focus on inward urbanism, which would necessitate sustainable urban planning legislation.

If the Province of New Brunswick was serious about dealing with its deficits, it would engage in sustainable urban planning for all municipalities. This province needs density. Dealing with deficits would mean the government would have a stronger capacity to invest in job creation.

I'm sick of this province losing people to Halifax, and Central Canada, and Western Canada.

I was in Halifax on the weekend and I guess our downtown is not the only place suffering. Barrington st had only a handful of stores. I was looking at some of the more independent stores in some of the malls. They have beautiful clothing and speciality kitchen stores. Maybe some of these would work in our downtown

I completely agree with you. Downtown Halifax has been stagnant for far too long, especially commercially. It is only recently, partly due to the urban planning legislation 'HRMbyDesign' that was adopted a few years ago, that construction life has returned to the downtown at a pace that has moved beyond what has essentially been just a single project at a time.

And thankfully the recent core proposals are not suburban in format; they are mixed-use, built to the sidewalk, and encourage a culture of walking as opposed to car dependency.

With the current residential developments in the core there will be more local customers to support commercial establishments on Barrington. But...yes, I agree with you that Barrington has certainly been suffering, and it's quite embarrassing.

Halifax also needs to reform its tax system so the suburbs are paying their fair share -- or at least something closer to it...

Does anybody have any indication as to if the Ashford development in the Rogers lot is going to go ahead this year? It would be great to see more infill in this part of downtown.

Good news for downtown! @MrSeanPower tweeted on Twitter today: "It's official. Starbucks will be coming to downtown Moncton in the old CIBC building".

Let me say it was about time that Starbucks comes downtown. I don't think it will really hurt "niche" coffee shops like C'est La Vie Café, but it could definitely take some customers away from Timothy's and Tims. It also really nice that that building gets used. I wonder if they will give it a facelift, it would be awesome, because that building is not the best looking building downtown.

IT's ABOUT TIME!!!!!

So, the Updated list of Starbuck's in greater Moncton:

- Champlain Place
- Chapters at Crystal Palace
- Lounsbury's Centre
- Target (Northwest Centre on Mountain Road, coming soon)
- Downtown (old CIBC on Main Street, coming soon)

And of course, you can pick up Starbuck's at the Delta Beausejour and at the Greater Moncton International Airport, but those aren't full fledged Starbuck's outlets.

Great news! I hope he's talking about the CIBC at the corner with Church... or is it the other one near Highfield square. Isn't that building empty too?

The Coin Cabinet has moved into expanded premises in the other CIBC. It is a very nice store. He is indeed referring to the old bank branch on the corner with Church. The streetscape of that block on Main will now be complete, with all high end tenants (Starbucks, Old Triangle, Colpitts, Timothys and National Bank). Main Street is gradually clawing it's way back to health (especially the central and eastern portions)

Indeed, I'd say slow but steady progress. And as for the western portion... well we all know what the linchpin for development in this area is. I am encouraged to hear Minister Goguen's recent comments about potential funding for the project... all is not lost, but still a long way to go. There is potential for dramatic change in the next 10-15 years.

Isac Korean Cuisine

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but the old convenience store below La Guitare has now become a Korean restaurant, I have been there once and have to say its really good and authentic and the kimchi is fantastic! It's another great addition to St. George!

You'll notice that this file was created in 2009. It also indicates that this plan is a 10 year implementation project. Ridiculous in my opinion. We're now on year 4 of this plan and there's absolutely no noticeable changes on St- George st from this project.

This project shouldn't take more than 2 years to complete and there's no reason why the city couldn't plan & budget this project for 2 years instead of 10.

I'm very disappointed.

I would expect it to be extremely difficult to budget for something that will only benefit a relatively small number of residents directly.

I don't know about Moncton but in St. John's they had a hard time establishing here because we already have a huge supply of cafe establishments, however we have 4 currently (kenmount road, chapters on Kenmount road, Downtown in Atlantic place, and one in the stavanger shopping area)and they have 2 more planned (one in Target and another in the new Empire theatres both of which are also in the Stavanger area) along with an apparent "major expansion" of the brand in the Capital region so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out here .. we do NOT have one in the Airport nor in any hotels

They have set aside Money in this spring and summer budget for the St. George St. redevelopment, as noted by one of our fellow members a few pages back.

Also the lot on St.George where the church was torn down recently is now sold!

Demolition is now under way at the Moncton Hospital to allow for construction of the new oncology clinic:

The old lab wing at the back of the hospital is coming down as you can see in this photo.
