What exactly is the point of this project? I can understand doing an expansion if it actually expands the number of terminals / gates.. But if it indeed reduces the number of gates by 12.. I don't really see the point. This new design doesn't seem to make walking distances any shorter... In addition to what the others have said, my understanding is that the new gates will be able to handle all sizes of modern aircraft more efficiently - meaning more flights will be able to go in and out of a given gate during a calendar day. So even though there will be fewer gates, the improved efficiency of the new gates will allow the airport to handle MORE flights than it currently can.

Bingo. The airport will be MUCH more efficient. Every gate will have a Jetbridge capable of handling just about every size of airplane. There will be 74 jetbridges at the new airport. The current airport only has about 50 and only a few of them are capable of handling large aircraft.

SLC is a good airport and efficient for its size - but it's dated and not equipped to handle the growing responsibilities of being a Delta hub ... or the growth the state is seeing as a whole.

ALT LAKE CITY — More investment banks are looking to expand in Utah, something that has many wondering if Salt Lake City could become the Wall Street of the West.

Goldman Sachs is seeing a lot of growth in its Utah office. In fact, with 1,500 employees, Salt Lake City is Goldman's second-largest office in the Americas.

"The ability to attract talent here in the Intermountain West is significant," said David Lang, Goldman Sachs managing director. "We've been very successful at it."

"It's not only them. It's Royal Bank of Scotland that came and put an operations center in Taylorsville," said Todd Brightwell with the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. "Many people don't know that Zions Bank has a significant trading floor here in downtown Salt Lake City.

Brightwell said more financial services companies are seeing Utah as a great place to expand. The Economic Development Corporation is working with three major banks on projects that would bring 1,000 more banking jobs to Utah.

Let's hope those 1,000 jobs between the three banks will all be downtown.

Yeah...I don't buy we'll ever really be considered the Wall Street of the West. If anything, we'll be a feeder city to the major banks around the world. But it's hard to believe we'll have the financial clout to rival Denver, L.A., and San Francisco - three cities that have claimed, or claim, to be the 'Wall Street of the West'.

If we can claim "Wall Street of the West" or not, I don't really care. I simply like that fact that more financial firms are looking to add or increase there presence in Utah, and hopefully Downtown SLC.

As I have mentioned a couple of times in the past, other firms are going to notice the success that Goldman Sacs has had in SLC, and particularly since they relocated to downtown. These other firms will take notice and will decided that it's a smart move.

Having the 2nd largest Goldman Sacs office in the country is a great start to actually being able to claim, "Wall Street of the West" though. The fact that Bloomberg is the one to make the statement that Utah is making a case for it, isn't something to simply sneeze at.

I actually had no idea that Zions had a trading floor. Very interesting.

Overall this is very promising news.

I like the sound of the PAC Tower actually being the "Royal Bank of Scotland Tower"

No doubt. Though, after the last financial meltdown, and how Goldman Sachs took American taxpayers to the cleaners, while having a hand in the biggest economic collapse we've seen since the Great Depression, having them associated with the city doesn't perk my ears quite like some other companies.

I guess everything in the name of progress ... but, yeah.

We are all slaves to the central banking system. Their offices typically tower over or rival any other amongst the skyline of every city; and we continue to look up from below while slaving away.

Oh, but the towers, they look so neat...

While I dont want to be hard on this article and while its very exciting that these mid level jobs are coming into Utah, you need to keep in mind that these are mid level jobs being re-located here because its to expensive to be done in places like New York. These jobs are operation jobs. They are not trading jobs. All back office and processing jobs. Its not a bad thing but its not earth shattering work either.

I think/hope that we will see more job growth in the energy sector and potentially get more involved in the energy game though the competition is stiff with Texas and Denver.

New Performing Arts Center Design to be Unveiled

SALT LAKE CITY – On Wednesday, April 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Gallivan Hall at Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, along with members of the City and County councils, will be presented with design concepts for the New Performing Arts Center by Cesar Pelli and Mitch Hirsch of the internationally acclaimed architecture firm Pelli Clarke Pelli.

Pelli and Hirsch will present architectural renderings of the Main Street and Regent Street views of the building as well as a 4’ x 4’, 1/16 scale model of the theater as it is proposed to be situated on Block 70 in downtown Salt Lake City. The model will assist in demonstrating proposed locations for key elements of the project including the black box, mid-block walkway, winter garden and plaza.

The New Performing Arts Center is a proposed 2,500-seat, state-of-the-art theater located on Salt Lake City’s Main Street, between 100 and 200 South. The theater helps fulfil community leaders' long-time vision for a lively capital city that is rich in the arts. The Center will attract premier arts presentations and experiences, expand cultural offerings and serve as an economic catalyst to Salt Lake City, the state and the region.

A media-only preview will precede the press event at 11 a.m.

Wow, It looks like tomorrow is going to be a big day for both Downtown Salt Lake and Provo. I haven't been this excited about Metro developments since the pending announcements of CCC.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high for it. I was hoping that we'd see a design for the tower tomorrow as well, but I can see them just having a blank box stand-in for it. Wishing/hoping for more, but trying not to.

We should see the base/lobby area of the tower as this is a shared space with the theater but anything beyond that I expect to be a placeholder as the tower is being done by a different architecture company than the theater.

If nothing else, a blank box as the tower will at least give us some idea of how high and size of it.

I think it would make sense to use this opportunity to present the designed tower too, because of all the excitement and publicity generated for the UPAC! A designed tower being presented along with the UPAC would be a great opportunity to generate more interest for leasing. I certainly hope they show something more than a big grey box.
