Glad to see the Vibiana is off the endangered list.

Restaurateur Bill Chait Joins Vibiana Dining Concept

Tuesday, April 2, 2013, by Kat Odell

That took a hot minute. But guess what?! Vibiana Cathedral finally landed a 47 liquor license in the names of Amy Knoll (chef Neal Fraser's wife) AND restaurateur Bill Chait (Sotto, Picca, Bestia) to open that long-tracked dining engagement, originally the relocated Grace. But, plans changed over the years and reps for the project say that the new concept, still slated to takeover the old rectory (as determined from the beginning), is now set to launch late 2013. Not a ton of information at this time, but at least one detail is confirmed: Julian Cox is behind the restaurant's bar program. Hence, the full 47.
·All Vibiana Coverage [~ELA~]

Update: According to this here website, Fraser has named the new eatery Redbird: "Separate of Neal Fraser & Co. events at Vibiana, Redbird, the highly anticipated follow up to Grace, will be opening on the first floor of the old rectory building adjacent to the Vibiana cathedral in the fall of 2013. At both Vibiana and Redbird, the pair will bring a cosmopolitan experience and ambitious dining to downtown Los Angeles."

If another supertall were to be built, I think the parking lot on the northwest corner of 6th & Hope (across from Aon Center) would be ideal. Although I don't know what the situation is with that lot or who owns it.

If we wanted to further the pyramid effect that we currently have in DTLA, that'd make a nice spot. Kind of a smaller lot but it'd at least be between Library Tower and Aon Center.

I'd either pick the metropolis site or the lot north of the Hotel Figueroa just for the sake of adding continuity to the skyline. A supertall on either of these lots would fill in much of the gap between the southern end of the financial district with burgeoning south park. Now that the two Marriotts are being built, were actually getting pretty close to linking these two areas of DTLA.

My apologies in advance for being off topic but it is unfortunate to see so many people on these various pages take photos while driving. Distracted driving kills over 3,000 people per year and impairs your ability to drive as much as alcohol. I appreciate people sharing photos but it isn't worth a serious accident.

That looks like a picture taken from the back seat to me.

Here are some pics of the Double Marriott at ground level yesterday.

Cladding is going up very quickly, considering where it was in Mojeda's pics just one week ago. Looks better than I expected.

Building should acquit itself well at night due to it's architectural lighting. Nice complement for the Ritz Carlton.

Agreed! They're moving so quickly now. Crazy to imagine this immediate area in 10 years with a few more waves of hotels.

Yes it was a backseat photo; I would never risk my life for such a terrible photo on my Iphone! Thank you for caring about my safety though

This evening, I was delighted to see the crappy pop-out stucco facade addition removed, and facade/structural work being done on this charming, neoclassical bank building at Spring/7th. Does anybody know what will become of the building? It is great to see gentrification finally cross 7th street!

Here is the building in mention: http://goo.gl/maps/EpPgP

I didn't think anyone else would notice such a thing!

They were working on it even today which was nice to see. There is so much potential for this intersection.. If Van Nuys could get retail in their corner spot, and the SB building there could get retail in that massive underused spot, this could be the hottest intersection in downtown.

(BTW, Van Nuys does seem to be adding some sort of business to the right of their front entrance).

Here is a picture taken a couple days ago of the Spring/7th building you mentioned.

Important reading.

Parking requirements as a barrier to housing development: regulation and reform in Los Angeles

By Michael Manville
Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies Institute of Transportation Studies

"Abstract: Using a partial deregulation of residential parking in downtown Los Angeles, I examine the impact of minimum parking requirements on housing development. I find that when parking requirements are removed, developers provide more housing and less parking, and also that developers provide different types of housing: housing in older buildings, in previously disinvested areas, and housing marketed toward non-drivers. This latter category of housing tends to sell for less than housing with parking spaces. The research also highlights the importance of removing not just quantity mandates but locational mandates as well. Developers in dense inner cities are often willing to provide parking, but ordinances that require parking to be on the same site as housing can be prohibitively expensive."

Olympic is going to have it's own little canyon once the other Marriott and car wash site take shape. I predict Olympic & Figueroa to be a pretty important intersection within the decade due to the streetcar and all the development in the immediate area. I'm heading down to Downtown this weekend, so expect another update on the Marriott, Broad, 8th and Grand, Hope, and 9th and Olive.

^ There's another Marriott on its way? Or do you mean Renaissance?

BTW, more buildings of this quality please! Is that wishful thinking?

Well, Renaissance is a Marriott brand so you're not completely wrong.
