Construction should start soon on a new flagship Restoration Hardware store in Buckhead.

The luxury home furnishings retailer is “very close” to breaking ground on the six-story store at the former ESPN Zone building, said CEO Carlos Alberini in an April 18 call with analysts.

Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. plans to build a “full line design gallery,” its new store concept, which is larger than others to accommodate more furniture including its small spaces collection and products for babies and children.

A Ferris wheel could become a fixture in downtown Atlanta.

An affiliate of St. Louis-based Pacific Development LLC has filed plans for a 180-foot-tall Ferris wheel called “SkyView."

The group wants to test the idea May 1 through July 31, but intends to seek approval “for an extended duration of operations,” according to the plans. Al Mers, a partner at Pacific Development, declined to comment about the project.

The Ferris wheel would sit on a parking lot owned by the Tabernacle at the corner of Luckie Street, Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Nassau Street.

The amusement would feature 42 “fully enclosed climate-controlled gondolas” that fit six people each. Rides are expected to take 12 to 15 minutes and promise views of Centennial Olympic Park and the downtown skyline.

The operators expect to attract 1,000 to 3,000 passengers each day, according to the plans. It would operate seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Pacific Development operates other ferris wheels in South Carolina and Florida, according to its application, including one in Myrtle Beach.

IMO, Myrtle Beach is a much more appropriate location for for this type of contraption. If people are hell-bent on putting one downtown, this is a better location than where Marcus planned near the aquaruim. Its a more attractive, close-up view of most of downtown without overlooking the train tracks and warehouses to the west of the aquarium area.
I'm not against additional things for tourists and locals to enjoy downtown, I would just prefer something more unique.

MARTA is marching ahead with plans to redevelop about 4 acres next to its King Memorial station.

MARTA will test developers’ appetite for the project in May when it issues a request for qualifications. MARTA’s board of directors approved the step at its April 22 meeting.

During roughly the next two months, MARTA planning officials would take an initial list of potential developers of the King Memorial site, and their ideas, and pare it down to the most likely candidates. MARTA would then send out a request for more detailed proposals.

All this sets the stage for King Memorial to be the first of at least five transit stations in various stages of development over the next two years. MARTA underscored that goal in March, in a presentation before Atlanta developers it called Development Day. It has been working with the Atlanta Regional Commission throughout the process.

Pollack Shores Real Estate Group has started a 278-unit apartment project at Colonial Homes, a residential development dating back to the 1940s that stands among the wooded hills of south Buckhead.

Pollack Shores is redeveloping one of the aging Colonial Homes buildings into a 278-unit apartment project on 3.2 acres. It’s also going to renovate 212 units on an additional 17 acres at Colonial Homes.

755 North still has an anticipated completion date of next February, and though construction has lulled in the last month or so — "rainy season not the best time to be doing site work" — it will likely commence shortly, said McGinnity. It's not the first brief delay for the project, which was stalled back in January following a paperwork snafu with the city. The newly christened development, just one of several apartment projects in general area, will feature about 600 feet of Beltline frontage.

Los-Angeles-based COE Architecture International has completed the initial design for the conversion of an aging 9-story Buckhead office building to apartments.

COE is redesigning 550 Pharr Road, which was developed in the early 1970s but has since struggled to compete against newer Buckhead office towers.

Lyon Communities Development, based in Newport Beach, Calif., is redeveloping 550 Pharr and named COE Architecture International as its design firm. COE is probably best known for its renovation of the famous Hollywood Palladium nightclub on Sunset Boulevard. It’s worked on several high-profile residential projects in San Francisco.

Another related tidbit, on the schedule for the NPU-E meeting in early June is transfer of development rights from the Margaret Mitchell house property to 207 13th Street.
