Well, according to what I heard last night, it's not really a rumor any longer...

Another validation of Pittsburgh's change... as a kid, industry collapsed, and the exodus happened, in 2012 the ratio of inbound Uhaul's to outbound was amazingly different - so much so that Pittsburgh topped Uhaul's migration list:

Pittsburgh zoning board approves South Side apartments

April 12, 2013 10:23 am

By Diana Nelson Jones / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Zoning Board of Adjustment has approved a proposed renovation of a former whiskey distillery on McKean Street on the South Side into a 13-unit apartment building in a decision announced today.

The site, also known as the American Machinists Building, is near the River Walk Corporate Center off East Carson Street.

A special exception was granted for the proposed housing because it is in an urban industrial zoning district and to add another story to the building. The board also granted a variance for lack of a setback for three visitors' parking stalls. Each unit will have its own parking stall.

Representatives of the owner, Whiskey Flats LP, declined comment.

The proposed development is pending a hearing before the city planning commission.

A Kimpton hotel and an Ace hotel within the same time frame is really amazing and speaks to the rapidly changing demographics of this town.

The Kimpton Hotel development sure is a nice addition to Downtown! That Reed Smith building has been mentioned a lot in the local news, hasn't it, especially in regard to the Class B space vacancies?

I keep thinking and saying to myself, this is only the beginning of what is to come for Pittsburgh...
I'm thinking this is that building right next to the Panhandle Bridge? Someone on here is apparently involved in this project, and those renderings were impressive! I can't wait to see this happen!

Well, I know I tried to get a general idea before about this, but I'll throw it out again... Who's up for a Pittsburgh SSP meet? I know there are more than enough very active Pittsburgh area forumers to comprise one heck of a good group, and if it's planned a bit in advance we might even be able to get a few of the "former-'burghers" as well.

If anyone's interested, I'll propose the weekend before Memorial Day. So we've got about six weeks for people to free their calendars and perhaps free a weekend to come back to Pittsburgh. Anyone interested in this?

^^ I would be, but I don't think that time is right for me unfortunately... My wife and I are coming out at the beginning of June for a day before heading up to Niagara Falls; it's my 30th B-day gift for her...

The date can always be altered by a week or two on either side, but I definitely think it's time we set up something solid for a meet-up!

So, anyone care to be nauseous? Check out this "interesting" letter to the editor in the Post-Gazette along with many of the comments! I swear, I truly hope that the majority of Pittsburghers really aren't the kind of thick-skulled, nonsensical, racist yinzers that these people make themselves out to be!

(Note I made myself quite a name for myself in this as well! Hahaha)

I would love to see LHR service. I would also like to see CDG flights stick around. If they don't, I won't be disappointed if we do actually have LHR flights instead...

I do agree that something needs to be done about thugs congregating. Not just Downtown, but anywhere where it is an issue. Moving transit buses is a solution? Really?

I didn't read all of the replies either. My IQ went down enough.

I do want to add this tho. I think Downtown, overall, is pretty safe. How often do acts of violence or disturbing the peace actually occur there?

I was walking all over larwenceville today and it's amazing how much infill and rehabs are going on all over the neighborhood. It's almost like parts of Houston with how much is going on.

I would DEFINITELY be interested in this...although I don't know if I'll have any free weekends between now and the end of June...

I have a feeling that half of the commenters in that thread haven't actually been downtown in decades. Either that or I just don't pay attention and never noticed the constant gun battles and roving gangs of ruffians whenever I go downtown (which is a couple times a week).

This. There's no doubt that have the people commenting in that thread haven't been downtown in decades, GeneW. It's just sad and pathetic how ridiculously thick-skulled these asshats truly are.

I've worked downtown for 15 years and I feel very safe. There are going to be questionable elements in any urban environment. I would say the downtown is probably the safest that its been in a long time. A larger police precense wouldnt hurt though.

I have been thinking alot about this lately. I am the first one to say I agree whole heartedly with regentrification (sp?) of neighborhoods but am criticized for it. But i will go on to say that i feel there is a place for everyone in a re imagined community. I label myself as fiscally conservative and dont believe in taxes being spent on most entitlement programs. However, I do agree that these programs could be worth while with significant reform. Bottom line, i believe along with bricks and mortar improvements there needs to be the development of people too. I dont have my head head completely around the solution but I feel a little life coaching can go along way to build up members of society who feel that violence, drugs, etc is the only means to getting what need out of life.

The system is broke and has been for a very long time. There simply arent enough opportunities out there and the ones that are require certain skill sets and education. Too many people are falling aside because the emphasis in most curriculums is all about test scores and basic skills and not on discovering what one is good at doing and guiding them along a path for them to create their own opportunities. its sink or swim and too many end up sinking.

I also feel that popular music feeds the attraction to get rich and die trying and hip hop artists are laughing all the way to bank preaching a message that is destroying minds and not do anything to help solve problems plaguing vulnerable demographics. Although im a big fan of his music, if Whiz Khalifa and others could fork over some of their millions to fund some local youth / mentorship programs we could see a huge decline in incidents like the one that happened downtown.

Ok i'll get off of my soap box but just had to get across that we can make the city as beautiful as ever but if there isnt a proportionate investment made in the people who populate revitalized cities then we are swimming upstream.

You know, you do have a good point. A few of the members of that little PG discussion thread have stated that problems like that stem from, well, home. Some folks have a lousy upbringing, usually poor parenting; people who just don't care about how their kids turn out. They're the ones who go out and cause the bulk of the problems (committing crimes, abusing the system designed to help sick or disabled people, etc).

I agree that everyone seems to put emphasis on the wrong things when it comes to education.
-"Hey, can you locate New York City on a map of the United States?"
-"Eh, who cares, they scored in the top percentile on a standardized test."

^^ That's actually something that alarms me; the vast majority of people are piss poor at geography! You mention how there is no emphasis on development of skills, well let my example with geography be exhibit A. I have always had an interest in geography, and I guess it all started with PBS and "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" That show made geography something fun and interesting to learn. Eventually, I discovered that geography has a whole plethora of skills under its umbrella, especially urban and regional planning. I eventually majored in that at college and pursued a masters degree in that field. The one problem with that, however, is 90 percent of the jobs appear to be geared toward people who are either mid- or senior-level career and higher...

But seriously, at the high school level, people should have a decent idea of what their strengths and skills are so that the administrative bodies can help them down the right paths. Or, the administrative bodies and/or teachers alike should help or encourage students to develop certain areas of interest, especially if a certain penchant for such an interest seems to be on the rise...

That conversation was and IS ridiculous. I think that's why it's getting so much attention and replies. I mean, STOP bus service downtown? That lady is retarded.
I commented like 6-7 times.

And if you noticed, I called her out; A quick google search showed she is a NINETY-TWO year old lady from Mt Washington!! And you know how those grandmas think about the "coloreds"...

And yes, I will be in attendance for any upcoming SSP forumer meetup however big or small it turns out to be. Cheers!
