Hey, they can tell both universities to go f*** themselves, like they pretty much did this past budget. That's fine with me, I'm a taxpayer who isn't impacted by either university. I just have a problem when any government does this one week, then shows up the next for a photo op trying to make them look like they support higher education and housing.

For the record, why is the university lucky they got any money? This would seem like a no-brainer: 600 housing units that will help remove the strain on a tight market and hopefully take vehicles off the road.

I found out that the Pita pit on Hamilton will be closing and moving to a new location somewhere in the east end around Quance. This is because of the FCC tower going up and all the other movement that will be happening. My understanding is that the Green spot will most likely be moving into the current Pita Pit location.

In any case, on Global news tonight, they also mentioned that after the planned completion in 2015, they would like to basically immediately move on to another on-campus residence project, so this could just be the start.

Senior administration at the University sent out an email today regarding the project. I will just quote a couple of the points that weren't mentioned in fourthtower's million posts.



- The first phase of the project will begin with tree removal on April 15 and, if the weather
permits, construction fencing will be erected on April 28.

- This is great news for our campus. On-campus residence capacity is
currently about 10 per cent of the student population, well below the 25
per cent capacity offered by some Canadian universities. A new residence
will allow us to attract even more domestic and international students
and increase retention rates, as students who live on campus are more
likely to stay enrolled.

- Activities will begin on the site Monday, April 15 with the relocation
of trees that are in good condition and removal of others. There will
be some parking restrictions/areas marked off for the tree removal in
order to provide safe clearance for this activity. On or around April
28 the installation of fencing surrounding the site will occur so that
excavation of the site and ongoing construction can begin.

- This major project will affect parking, especially during the
construction period. Those parkers directly affected will each be
contacted by mail to inform them of the impact and their options during
the construction period and beyond. As the Minister, Board of
Governors Chair and President mentioned at yesterday’s press
conference, this is a fantastic project for the University of Regina and
broader community as critical affordable housing is built. Thank you in
advance for your understanding and support as this great project is
implemented over the next two years.

I agree, this is something that would be nice for that area. However, I'm a bit pessimistic and I'm guessing it will end up being a Boardwalk ghetto of 2-storey small apartment buildings.

I think the building next door on Halifax is basically a larger version of the building on 14th. I'm not certain, but I think it has a different owner. The only one they're tearing down is the one on 14th. The other building is still occupied. I've never been in the buildings but from the outside it looks as though the building next door (on Halifax) has been better taken care of.

Not sure if you are following the global economy, or at least what's going on in Canada but there is a financial crisis going on due to many factors, including an ageing infrastructure, an ageing population and in Sask's case, a growing population in general. All of this costs money and is a challenge for governments (even resource-rich ones, see Alberta). Most government departments were limited to a 2-3% increase in funding, including post-secondary education. Capital spending is also limited so lets be happy the government is helping contribute what it can to a well needed project.

I think you need to settle down just a little bit. You seem to think that I am pro-NDP or anti Sask Party... which is not the case. I neither follow, nor support either. I do not like political hypocracy, which this unveiling is. This government has been playing serious hardball with both universities. Then they show up all rosy-cheeked for the presser... I'm sure the U of R brass was just was oh so pleased...

As for the balanced budget thing... I'll refer to the Provincial Auditor who has called on the Government (and the NDP were also guilty of this) to be more transparent. Good for you though if you think that our provincial debt is shrinking.

As one who drives past the university every day on my way to work, I am pleased that more students will live on campus and not drive to school as is currently the case.

If history is any indication, that will be the location of the next downtown skyscraper. They tend to get built wherever the Green Spot is located.

I was in London Drugs this afternoon and was talking to an electronics sales associate about the new London Drugs that will be built at Grasslands in Harbour Landing. He told me that Cineplex is building a new theatre complex directly west of the new LD store. The Southland Cinemas will close when the new theatres open. He did not know if it would be another Galaxy or one of Cineplex's other brands, nor did he know how many screens the new complex will have.

I sure hope it's not another Galaxy. Regina is due for one of Cineplex's more upscale facilities.

Who knows , maybe someone can convince the Ghermezian family -Triple Five Group- to purchase the mall and maybe turn it into a mega-mall that's of similar size to the West Edmonton Mall, if only smaller. That's what I would love to happen, but it's not realistic.

The space isn'y really that big to begin with, I think that's a bit unrealistic to hope for unless they add 5 floors to the existing foot print.
