As far as precipitation is concerned, there is overall agreement that Texas will get drier as a whole but there is some debate about specific regions such as the Austin area in what kind of local precipitation changes we will see over the next 10 to 20 years. Some precip models actually show an increase in annual rainfall around the Austin area so in other words precipitation is a lot harder to accurately predict in running climate model forecasts. Temperature models have more confidence in the outlook.

My thinking is Austin will continue with longer dry spells with bursts of heavy rain in between like we have seen over the last few years as opposed to a more evenly distributed annual rainfall we once had 10 to 20 years ago. With some years being below average and others at average or above. But as an example we actually did reach around our average rainfall in 2012 but now our rainfall is very erratic and then we get a month or two in between of literally bone dry weather. Yea we got about 32 inches but in the way we got it didn't help much and did not fill the tributaries. I think our overall average will slowly decline over 20 years from 32-34 inches to 24-26 inches but I don't see this part of Texas becoming desert. Again we could see the opposite happen and start getting more rain. Reasons some models show that is our position to the gulf and the escarpment. The gulf I'll move inland a little as the icecaps continue to melt. But no doubt it will get hotter overall.

That's my prediction as I've studied Meteorology and Environmental Sciences before I changed my degree plan so I am knowledgeable in this area.
Appreciate the insight. While it is harder to show what affect things like solar flare cycles vs human caused emissions, I think at this point it's pretty blatantly obvious that it is getting warmer.

I lived in Alaska for 10 years, and no one has ever seen the glaciers melt like they are right now. I lived on the Arctic Ocean in Barrow for a while as well and everyone who had lived there for a long time would talk about the impact and I mean locals many of whom weren't well educated on such matters in the first place. This year, the there was clear ice for a while in late February. That means the ice was thin enough that the tide could pull out the ice. Usually the ice is frozen solid for 6+ miles out.

I hope Austin does not turn into a drier climate as I have so many fond memories regarding water. I was reading a research paper talking about the impact on the environment in the hill country due to us reducing the water level of the aquifers so much over the years. So many spring fed creeks that no longer exist, etc...

I would really hate it if we got much less rain. I love my bike rides around downtown for photos, followed by a dip in Barton Springs on the greenbelt. I jump in clothes and all and then ride back home dripping wet.

I'm a big believer in the sun's activity, or lack thereof, having more to do with weather than humans.

I hate hearing, or reading about stuff like that... it's depressing.

The sun flare cycles do have an impact on global climate but it does not contribute to the increased C02 levels which are caused by humans. We still have a long way to go to really understand what impacts the flare cycles do and there is no way to see past long term changes during sun flare cycles. We do however have lots of evidence and can see the history of Co2 levels from the past and correlate those readings with how the climate was during those times. From my stand point sun cycle activity really plays a minor role in the overall scheme of things but as we learn and record more data, we will see. But no doubt that as soon as the industrial revolution began that is when Co2 levels world wide began to increase. We know this because we can pull out long strips of ice cores at both poles (wherever any is left) and take readings. The deeper down, the farther back in time you go. We also know that the planet is hotter now than ever before in recorded human history (that doesn't mean the planet hasn't been hotter in the past, it has) also new data came out recently showing Co2 levels the highest ever recorded . There is too much evidence to say we are not causing global warming.

Those aerials with so many people in the streets are amazing. But that damn Mighty Fine Hamburger add keeps popping up.

I remember walking around this area of town as a teenager going to a Reverend Horton Heat concert at Liberty Lunch. The desolation and emptiness of the area at the time stood out to me. And the measly "city hall"

Cool story about the April 1915 flood of Shoal Creek and Waller Creek. Story has 3 photos from that time as well.

Empty and desolate, I guess, but there was something soulful about downtown Austin that spoke to me. I can go back even further (mid 1960s) and recall a downtown with mostly one and two story buildings or vacant lots, a 6th ST with virtually no activity except for one or two skid row beer joints, no night life or decent food anywhere, no music scene, and not very much retail activity either. Even then, it seemed kind of special to me. I have no idea why, but I have always liked being in downtown Austin.

That is a picture of a true warehouse district. I remember going to Liberty Lunch back in the day and thinking about what a run down and creepy area area I was in. For those who don't know, Liberty Lunch was located roughly across the street from where Violet Crown Cinema is in what is now a Silicon Labs parking garage.

I did a new photo thread. I went up to the Omni in downtown and the Courtyard Marriott.

Kevin, I found an interesting vantage point, but I don't have the gumption to go into the office and ask if I can take photos. Maybe you could sometime. Only thing is I'm pretty sure this particular view is through glass only. But it is clean.

1250 S Capital of Texas Hwy (where Austin Diagnostic Clinic is). I was messing around and went up to the 5th or 6th floor, and the office as you step out of the elevator has a great view of the skyline. Had a secretary there, but I didn't have a good camera and was nervous about asking. haha
