Hold the hell up.

In what world does a Chevy Volt cost $90,000?

The base price of a Chevy Volt is $42,000 without any government subsidies whatsoever.

Even better, the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle starts at $38,000, and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV starts at $32,000 - all pre-subsidy.

I just assumed that his $90,000 figure was factoring in some sort of overhead development cost or grant money above and beyond its sticker price that went into getting the vehicle to market.

Just a reminder that this thread is for Development & Construction in Saint John.

If you feel like you need to have a discussion on the merits of electic vehicles SSP provides a forum called the SkyBar for such conversations.

90K is the cost of production, not the cost you see at the dealer.

It appears that the construction work with regard of the Second Cup has started in the former UNB bookstore location. The "for lease" sign is gone and there were FCC construction workers on site.

There were 2 posts about that topic and you jump in to curb it already? A little quick doncha think? Most mods give it atleast 7 or 8 posts....

If you go back over the last three pages, there were at least 12-15 posts dealing variably with the end of the oil based economy in general and electric vehicles in particular. The thread was going off topic. I agree with JHikka

I count six. I let a page and a half conversation about pulp mills and their products go on because it was relevant to the local economy and employment, but anything more than what is already there probably deserves its own thread.

When discussing the potential of a new pipeline and the future of an oil refinery directly relating to the local economy I think discussing the potential future of electric cars is quite relevant. I agree with the masses that there was little need to jump in here.

I was going to say something this morning as well but I bit my tongue- err... fingers.
I realize that there will probably never be a 'skyscraper' (>39 stories as per Emporis) in Saint John in my lifetime, but I follow this thread to track development/construction, not irrelevant chatter, rants or inter-city bashing as I've seen since I started following way back when we were only at Page 55. The hundreds of silent daily visitors to this thread would probably agree!

If Fundy Quay was made into one tower instead of three, SJ would have a 39 story skyscraper haha

Heard something today about a meat & vegetables store called Sizzles opening soon at 200 Canterbury. No idea how much truth there is to this.

Always happy to hear about new Uptown businesses!

Keith Brideau, founder of Historica Properties, has recently started a video blog. His latest entry talks about the ongoing renovations at the Hayward and Warwick building converting the former warehouse space on the upper floors into 25 residential units. Adaptive reuse of our upper floors might be less visible than new residential construction, but the effect is the same: more people living Uptown, more vibrancy and more opportunities for business. I wish Keith the best with this and future projects!

Another month, another PAC agenda. Only a couple development-related items:

1. Rezoning/Variance proposal for the proposed 3 storey, 6-unit building at 60 Church Avenue (former Torch For Truth Tabernacle lot), as reported a few weeks ago. The variance is to reduce the minimum required parking spaces from 8 to 6. Staff's assessment of the proposal was quite positive.

2. Continuing Section 39 condition negotiations pertaining to the repurposing of the former West Side Legion as a rentable multipurpose space with liquor license.

They need to raise enough money first, so I would expect to wait until at least 2014.
