Ground level retail needs some kind of critical local residental (or pedestrian traffic) mass. Unfortunately the areas where we're seeing these units fail are areas that simply haven't got the customer-base yet. More residential within walking distance, more density, and the ground level retail will eventually flourish.

Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra planning big changes for Pantages

Administrative staff of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra have finally seen the light of day. They have temporarily moved their offices from their cramped basement quarters at Centennial Concert Hall to the 16th floor of the Richardson Building.

It's part of a larger plan that will see them moving into newly designed quarters at Pantages Playhouse in the next three to four years. The WSO has been managing the heritage building for the past few years, working with a not-for-profit group called the Performing Arts Consortium that has an interest in the revitalization and transformation of the venue.

What is happening with the residential development at 448 Hargrave? It seems to be stuck in limbo for ages.

I think the biggest example of a failure for street level retail is Place Promanade behind Portage Place. Ended up driving down there by accident recently and noticed it is exactly the type of design that is commonly talked of fondly here. Yes, it had some places but unless you lived there or stumbled on them it seemed unlikely that they would be pulling in people. Those units go back to when the whole NoPo (North Portage) redevelopment took place.

The site of this design proposal (went nowhere) is the newly functioning daycare Kids and Company. The reno you see in streetview is for the daycare.

Looks like the city is replacing the traffic lights for Portage and Main. Backed up traffic a bit this morning.

Is there a topic on that already? I would love to read it.

While some areas are still struggling with getting tenants, others are striving -- the west exchange is going strong with quite a few pedestrian friendly pockets... The one sour spot, as someone brought up earlier, is the new Bedford Parkade units.

If it wasn't for the 3 residential towers that are about to fall down there, I think this area could be really nice. I love the pedestrian feel, but nothing ever came of it. The narrowness of the lane forces traffic to go slow, and people feel free to cross the street anywhere because of it.

For what its worth:

I received an email from Glasshouse condos (Urban Capital) advertising the construction of its model suite, presentation centre as being "well under way" in the atrium of Cityplace Mall,

plus a "pop up" store where one can see building renderings, suite floorplans, a furnished model suite, and the "surrounding neighbourhood including Centrepoint"

Opening is May 11/12th.

Did they say where the pop up store is located? Reason I am asking is there is something being build on the 2nd floor of City Place on the other side of the new Shark Club in the old toy store and was wondering if that was it.

I have been looking down from the 2nd level at City Place in the model suite as its being drywalled and it looks a little small if its an accurate representation of whats being built.

No it didn't seem they did, but this link might help (there is a picture below, might be the pop up store)

What's in the picture is what's being built on the main floor of City Place.

Maybe whats going on the 2nd floor of City Place is something else.

They're gonna be fairly small I think, but the price should be relatively affordable. Smaller spaces can work if the layout is good. At ikea they have a few setups of a 650 sq ft "home" that maximizes space. It works surprisingly well for how small it is.

The small homes at Ikea are actually 592 sq ft.

I just moved from a 995 sq. ft condo to a 592 sq. ft condo and I don't feel I am missing the extra space. So yes a proper layout makes all the difference.

Sorry to change topic but this kinda creative to have for a bridge. This design would probably not fit for our city but another kind of animal would.

Hey all complete this survey by True North (Wpg Jets) if you want to have the WHL (Western Hockey League- a canadian major junior team) in Winnipeg, I do not know where they would play but I presume the MTS Centre. I would surely by a mini pack or share a season ticket package.

Done.

What a no brainer! Could provide affordable hockey for youth, etc. that was lost when the NHL returned. I would definitely attend a few games a year, between Jets game of course!!
