I used to work in 30 Allen Plaza until last summer, and walked the area extensively on a daily basis. The City completely rebuilt and streetscaped Simpson St. between West Peachtree and Spring last Winter/Spring, and it looks great. They also made substantial sidewalk improvements along the west side of West Peachtree right at this intersection with Simpson. The thing is, with the exception of the renovated Best Western Plus (the former Inn at the Peachtrees) and a smallish rehabbed office building behind the motel, this block borders nothing but surface lots. I used to occasionally come across small groups of people strolling this area with what appeared to be rolled up blueprints and would always ask them if something was about to happen. All I ever got were smiles and nods. These are the blocks where the highrise Post apartments and the Publix were originally proposed, but who knows what may be in the pipeline - perhaps Terminus? At any rate, a pretty substantial investment was made by the City along this block and it seems primed for something.

Also, we need something to be done with the Southeast border of the Centennial Park area. The parking lots and crummy buildings there are horrible. Think of what it would be like to bridge between the park and the Fairlie-Poplar district.
This is the exact area where the proposed National Health Museum and the new Central Library were proposed. Haven't heard a thing about either in many, many months now.

Prime Perimeter Project Planned

The Atlanta Regional Commission has given its stamp of approval to the Perimeter area's largest proposed mixed-use project in ages. Houston-based developer Hines has pitched the project, called "100 Northpark," for a wooded plot at Abernathy Road and Ga. Highway 400.100 Northpark would be a mix of high-rise office space — with towers as high as 26 stories — about 150,000 square feet of retail space, 500 residential units and a 250-room hotel.Hines hopes to have 100 Northpark completed by 2017.

Also, 50 Allen Plaza, 34 floors, 500 feet - according to Emporis its status is planned/approved. I really liked the design of 50 Allen Plaza - if I'm not mistaken it's the building with the square/rectangle "hole" through the top? It's a pretty sharp design and would add to the downtown skyline...
does anyone have any information on these buildings? Thank you in advance!

Regarding the Allen Plaza project, I checked the website of the design architect, Pickard Chilton, and that project has been removed from the web site, with the exception of a small picture on their profile page map. So, I'm not sure what that means, but it could mean several things: 1) The project could have been canceled entirely, 2) Pickard Chilton is no longer the design architect, or 3) the client wants it to be confidential for the time being.

Great news! I would love to see the site plan for this... It would have to be a pretty urban layout to achieve such density on that site. Kudos to the Perimeter area for continuing to attract such large developments.

In others news, there is a developer looking at the site of the former symphony hall (14th street across from the 4 seasons) for a significant mixed-use project. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to say much, but I CAN say that preliminary massing studies indicate the tower(s) will be quite tall. Very early in the design process though. I wouldnt expect an announcement any time soon, just thought you guys would like to know that big things are also in store for Midtown.

Does anybody know what's happening with the Grand Bohemian that is (was?) planned for the lot adjacent to the proposed 100 Northpark project? It's the lot with Marta access? They were supposed to break ground by the end of 2012 so we're not too far out to assume it's cancelled. But I haven't heard anything. Here's a render...

Porsche HQ Site Video

According to the ABC, developers broke ground on the new Porsche North American HQ back in November 2012. This ceremony included a lot of talk and some elaborate shovel-in-the-sand action, under a tent... Not much has happened other than re-branding Old Dixie Pkwy as Porsche Ave on on the north side of the airport. I wonder when we can expect some progress:

Porsche is only taking a small portion of this lot as part of a larger development called Aerotropolis Atlanta

So, just to be clear - my understanding is that this:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BG80VjaCcAARuVz.jpg:large

will only be here this weekend?

But, we have a different Ferris Wheel in permitting that will be here for a year?

Where will this other Ferris Wheel go?

I hoping it doesn't get built here for several reasons:
Just because London (or any other city) has one doesn't validate a need to stick one in Atlanta. Kind of the same thinking that resulted in the Atlantic Station arch but don't get me started on that!

Really, what are you going to look at? You won't find anyone who loves the city more but the reality is we don't have a great (or even not-so-great) waterfront, a dense cluster of buildings or some stunning natural feature to look at. Basically the view will be the a/c condensors on the roofs of several low rise buildings, the mountains in the distance and Centennial Olympic Park. Not terrible but is it really enough to warrant a ferris wheel? The view going up the Peachtree Plaza will still be much more impressive.

IMO, they're kind of tacky. Along the same lines as a Pirate Museum but don't get me started on that!

If the powers-that-be are hell bent on building something, why can't we think outside the box? Below is a photo I posted back when this was first announced of an observation tower being planned (built?) in Taiwan. I'm not saying build this but can't we have something more unique than a ferris wheel?

I don't hate it but it's being done in every other city. It won't be an iconic attraction. Now maybe it will do gangbusters business. Orlando is doing it and there's even less to look at down there. London was perfect as it contrasts so perfectly with the older architecture and London is amazing to look at from the top of the Eye.

Plus, ATL is not London or Orlando as far as tourism. But I guess it could get enough business if it's truly temporary.

Methinks you protest too much. London is not known for its ferris wheel. Neither would Atlanta be known for its ferris wheel.

Actually, Ithinks what youthinks is somewhat off base.
Try and find a recent photo of the London skyline without the 'Eye' staring out at you. Atlanta has some impressive architecture and I hate the thought of a ferris wheel mucking up the view in every postcard shot of the city. Again, I'm hoping for something more unique.

London IS known for the London Eye. That may be anathema to some people but it's the truth now.

I see them all the time. And again, if a wheel is not beneath London, a wheel is certainly not beneath Atlanta.

Loosen up a bit.
