The popularity and need for Dundas Square is undeniable, but there's a fairly wide consensus by Toronto forum members that 'Metropolis' (the one with the billboards) was a dud. This area has always been over the top, loud, garish, bright, and commercial: this is the same area where the A&A records and Sam the Record Man sign used to be. I'm glad that the redevelopment respected the area's historic role by taking it up a notch, but the execution was terrible.
The building is shockingly ugly. It's almost like they assumed no one would notice because most of it would be covered in billboards. WRONG! Inside is just as bad. It looks and feels like a tin shed. It's easily the most depressing new building in the city and I avoid going in there at all costs.
The square itself is marginally better, but fails to have that sense of presence a big city square should have. It doesn't help that the square slopes to accommodate underground parking below OR that it's technically a
private square. Maybe in 30 years the whole thing will get a re-do.
