I agree !

And what about Washington ( MSA and CSA) and Clarke County as CSA. The figures I saw a couple of years ago Washington was was over the 25 % commute and Clarke was very close to 18 % for CSA ? 2010 Mobile-Baldwin CSA 595,257 2012 Mobile -Baldwin CSA 604,726 a slight 2 year gain of 9,469.

Just stumbled upon a potential project at the Mobile Regional Airport: a new parking deck...

http://crcalabama.org/wp-content/uploads...uthority-Intermodal-Hub-supplemental.pdf

This, and the attraction of a LCC, would start to put Bates Field over "that" hump, in my opinion. With all the new business beginning to flow into the area, we MUST strive to improve the airport and its services.

Very true. Look at Huntsville; you're about to have a lot of business travelers who are gonna pay whatever they have to, to fly.

Very true.

It's already a business-heavy airport, but an LCC would add so much to the dynamic.

I find it incredible Huntsville cannot keep a discount carrier. Maybe its location, near BHM and BNA?

I just got back from a business trip. You know the parking is better at P-cola. I had to walk to the back of the parking lot in Mobile the other night. I would have hated it if it was raining.

Oh, the company that I work for has been flying me out of Mobile recently. Actually the last six trips. The fares for my flights have been about $100 to $150 less than P-cola and Gulfport. I hope that trend continues.

I've been getting better fares out of MOB lately too.

Perhaps that's the primary reason traffic is up 8% this year so far.

Thats awesome! I didn't realize that traffic was up 8%. The new lights on the outside look great! It makes the whole airport feel better.

Yeah, it certainly does. There's a lot of work going on. I've seen another rendering showing the new ticket counters (look much improved) and read they're improving gate agent booths and adding a jetbridge to gate 6 among other things.

Bill Sisson said it was up 8% this morning at a Chamber meeting, according to a tweet I read earlier today.

The reason why is that Huntsville's traffic is predominantly government and tech traffic. Obviously, a sizeable portion of the traffic is typically tourism and travel traffic, but the number of gov/tech traffic is high enough that the airlines can make a safe bet that those entities will pay to fly their employees no matter the cost for the simple fact that those people HAVE to get where they're going.

Basically, the airlines know the traffic will be there, they just have to set the price.

ALTHOUGH, oddly enough, Huntsville has always been pretty cheap for me to fly out of. Out of the many flights I've taken, I've flown out of HSV about 80-85% of the time. A number of my flights out of HSV have actually been cheaper than comparable flights out of other airports; although, it should be noted that none of those flights (save for one AirTran flight) were on a low cost carrier.

A parking deck is long over due so far I've been hearing positive feed back about the new changes.

This is basically the same with MOB. Both, I guess, are heavily business-travel-related airports.

Soon enough, the passenger numbers will increase and the legacy carriers will begin competing at a higher level for those extra passengers.

That hasn't happened at HSV. HSV's traffic is at least twice that of MOB's if I'm not mistaken. Alabama airports have a tendency to lean Delta since Atlanta is so accessible; other airlines just seem to accept it and keep their prices at virtually the same level as other mainstream airlines.

Considering Mobile's traffic will be more business oriented than HSV's gov/tech traffic, you might see a difference, possibly. I guess it's all just a hurry up and wait situation.

I don't fully understand your statement. Once the merger of American Airlines and US Airways is complete, we will be down to three true legacy carriers. Moving forward, non-legacy airlines will have to step up and enter smaller markets or we all are going to continue to be at the mercy of Delta, American, and United.

It is expected that as passenger numbers increase, so will the competition for those "new" passengers. Yes, non-legacy carriers will go further to decrease the average ticket price, however. But, in its current state, the market will see decreases in ticket prices as passenger counts rise (albeit smaller than in the presence of a "discount" carrier).

Edit: Also, it is true that the future three legacy carriers will slightly raise the aggregate round trip fare, but they still do produce competition on a local level (at the same airport, but not adjacent airports, however).

MOB is embarrassingly low (and has been for 10+ years). We should currently be around 1 million passengers per year but there is a lot of leakage to GPT, PNS, and MSY. With all the new business coming into MOB (on top of the 8% passenger increases like we've seen this year thus far), I think we'll see a drive to get new carriers (hopefully )
