Granted I'm just a code monkey with no desire to go into independent retail, but my own gut feel is that if you are looking to start your own retail store, you need to first figure out what you want to retail.
Make a Top 5 or Top 10 list of things you know and would like to sell. Remember as a retailer, you need to KNOW what you are selling, so if you get into Cameras, you need to know all the ins and outs of how a camera works and is used and what cameras and lenses work best for what conditions.
Once you have that list, group like with like, to get a feel for what your coverage might be. A "Ladies Wear and Kosher Butcher" store probably won't work well together, even if you know a lot about both subjects. But a Kosher Butcher and Deli are a classic combo.
Then look at the market (Moncton in this case) and your possible store choices and figure out which ones might work best in it, and start researching, see who else is there, see who's started previously and closed up and try to figure out why they closed. Bankrupt due to lack of business is one sign. Closing because they were in business for 20 years and are retiring now with no one to take up the flag is an entirely different thing.
Once you know what you want to open, then the hard part starts up.
