The Globe article made it sound like that was the only bottle depot in the city. Oh and I'm also supposed to feel really bad for someone who has to work 4 h/d (28h/w) in order to survive when I work 40 h/w? It sounds like he's making minimum wage when it comes down to it, just like plenty of other people in this city. Guess what, they work hard and have difficult lives too. The article also tried to downplay how this is connected to addiction. It seems to me like most binners are dealing with that problem, not just a few. As for the dealers preying upon them when they leave the depot, I'm sure the fact that most of these people are binning to buy those drugs is part of that problem.

You don't need to bin to eat or have a place to live. There is welfare, there are disability benefits, there are food banks, there are shelters, there are soup kitchens. I know people who survive off of these things. It is not impossible. They would never bin (or beg or steal), nor do they have to. Getting money to pay for your addiction is another story...

I have nothing against binning. To me, it is a valid form of work. I just don't agree with presenting it as if it is the only form of survival.

Maybe I'm an ***hole and don't understand what's going on. I am open to that possibility.

definitely a great read and truly shows the hypocrisy of those fighting against "gentrification".

I still can't wrap my head around why someone is entitled to live downtown but that is another discussion.

Sorry no pics, but demolition is well underway of the former Commercial Electronics building at this site. Construction must be gearing up.

My only problem with gentrification is that it takes away cultural establishments, and replaces them with condos. I don't know if any of you are familiar with the Cobalt situation, but that was a very important club for the local heavy metal scene. Gentrification scares me because I think it's only a matter of time until the entire DTES is just an extension of downtown with million dollar condos replacing many of the important venues it has to offer.

If it dies it wasn't much of a scene in the first place.

Ya dont worry its just gonna move east down Hastings. Lots of cheap places to rent on that street. Block after block between the DTES and Hwy 1.

Further to which, where will -not including the lucky few who will get to live in a low-rent apartment (I'm referring in this case to the upcoming building from the article), - but also the homeless people, addicts, and people caught up in the poverty cycle, now living in the DTES, go .... if/when the DTES becomes gentrified.

They won't just disappear, and no fairy godmother is going to house them and care for them; nobody really does now, anyway.

So, where will they go, what will they do, and where will become the equivalent of the "new" DTES ---- if massive gentrification does take place there?

craptastic 1015 Denman Street project. I wish the original retail was just left as is 4 years ago ...... as with out residential above the is not a step forward at all. plus I can see a chain restaurant snagging this spot ..... ICK

A construction site in Vancouver B.C. doesn't appear to be the source of debris that smashed an apartment window in the city's west end on March 20.

Heavy wind blew debris into the window, which shattered and hit the street below.

The pane of glass hit a building as it fell, shattered and hit the road.

Pedestrians ran into a local business to get away from the falling glass.

No one was believed to be hurt by the debris.

Initial reports were that the falling debris came from a highrise construction site.

However, further investigation by the City of Vancouver found that this was not the case.

“It was alleged that debris from the construction site broke the window,” said Johnston.

“But, the debris that blew in the window does not look like construction debris. It looks like tiles from an apartment patio.”

No comment on the design but how is that underbuilt? it is exactly in line with the rest of the street and the vision of denman as a primarily 1-2 storey streetwall.

Developers aren't in the business of underbuilding sites.
