I posted it in the prior thread as part of an on-going discussion about garbage chute stink, however, after posting realized that it probably also fit here. Not having to smell someones garbage and not having vomit flying down from above is certainly something to consider when deciding on if urban condo living is for you.

Reading some of the issues, I think only a portion was to do with the actual structure, specifically the elevator issues and perhaps the water challenges. Barfing from the balconies, throwing garbage from the balconies, noise from the trains, sliding down garbage chutes, smell in the alley - these all are related to behavior of people that live in that building / in the area (save the train issues, which simply is a reality of the beltline). What to do about these sorts of things is not straight forward.

Every day in Suburbia. It really just comes down to this for me.....that and those stupid power centre road networks with over-angry drivers all over the place.

The problem with this view is that those are roads either going to or from the downtown. What the burbs work best for is the vast majority who do not go downtown and do not need to deal with the traffic in the vicinity of and/or in the core.

Speaking of which, I heard there was a real mess this morning!

Here's something from last month. A pedestrian was hit (sure, it can happen anywhere) but the result was core-centric. Everything ground to a halt.

Oh denial is rampant in disneyland. Enjoy your commute today!! It will get worse everyday, that is proven. Just think, a crappier commute everyday, and then a little crappier everyday as more and more people buy into this suburban lifestyle.

Lots of times, but in rush hour only a few times. I choose to live relatively close to my work and never need those roads to travel far across the city.

Wow, you scare me. At this point it is just getting weird. Nothing you say will ever convince me or anyone else living urban to give up the pleasures of downtown living. I dont even know why you try. Without the urban dwellers, downtown would be an even more scary place than you claim it to be. I will enjoy my (10 block) walk home with the hundreds of other professionals just like I do every day. I will even smile at a few people or have some pints along the way.

I live and work in the NW. I'm not super close to my place of work, but am not far, and virtually zero aspects of my travel to and from work gets mixed up with the rush hour traffic trying to get to and from downtown (which is the key).

Found this article interesting and annoying particularly because:
1. There is still much undeveloped land outside Calgary, and
2. that the author looks at "housing affordability" through a narrow lens and not all-in "city affordability" which includes transportation, water utilities, etc.

I would bet a $100 bucks this a developer commissioned editorial.

Also see this report that was sent to the CMHC, which helps qualify statements between housing affordability and transportation affordability:

For example with a income of $100,000, one could afford 45% of the housing stock in Calgary, but car-free you could afford 78% of the housing stock.
Should this be considered? Not if you are a developer.
