I actually like the harbour light building, it's run down, but personally I think the proportions and symmetry are excellent. Not in that location though, I agree something taller with street level retail would be great.

Too bad they couldn't save that building though, move it somewhere else.

It would be okay somewhere outside the downtown, but I don't think it's worth preserving in the location that it is in. It's not a true heritage building, just a faux !

I'm just getting sick of waiting

The rumor is that the geotechnical work at Harbour Light was to test the degree of contamination of the soil at the site. If contamination is above a certain level it will influence the type of structure that can be built (i.e. residential, office, etc.) at that site. Either way there seems to be something big planned for that site.

Interesting. The curious science guy in me wishes to know what kind of contamination they're looking for Either way, the Harbour Light location would be an ideal spot for a big development.

It's a good site but not really very large. For soil contamination to be a problem it would have to have been an industrial use at one time.

Likely fuel oil contamination. There was probably a spill from a heating oil tank at some point.

I think that's what makes it so interesting. The actual size of the lot is small, which could in turn lead to some sort of skinny yet tall development. Nothing massive of course, but something that could be eye catching on a smaller scale.

Industrial use in that area would make sense considering where it's located.

It would be great to find a site where you could dig down a bit, that would make a lot of difference for putting in parking, In any case, I don't think parking should be exposed at street level.

I thought it was a heritage building until someone here pointed out that it's not. Up close, it looks cheap and fake (like the Bowring Downtown Centre). I don't mind if it goes. The Salvation Army building, though, is awesome.

Kind of my thoughts as well. I liked Harbour Light until I got close to it. However, Salvation Army I think needs to stay, and as I've said before, would be very cool incorporated into a modern development on the site.

Harbour Light is ugly, run down and fake. Salvation army is nothing more than a concrete box. I really hope Harbour Light is torn down and I'm indifferent on the Salvation Army. This site has the potential to be a great highrise location! Something tall and skinny with underground parking would be spectacular!

I don't like either of the buildings that are currently there and very few of the 6 people that notice them in the run of the year will care if they disappear. But it would be cool if they worked the salvation army building, or maybe just the front facade into the development.

The front facade is essentially the only part I feel is worth preserving.

For what it's worth, that building, the former(?) Salvation Army headquarters was built in 1908, so its old enough to be a heritage building.

Only a few details like the front entrance and the windows on the third floor have been changed.

It looks nice there! Has it been reclad with fake stuff or something? It looks REALLY cheap up close now. It's only a step above vinyl.
