on a positive note, the building LOOKS neat so far!

I thought it seemed fairly obvious that east bound buses could access the Polo Park loop via the Empress bridge, no light neeed. This is of course built around the assumption that the existing transit loop will need to move to make way for a future mall expansion. Moving the transit loop to the east so it is behind Earls seems to make the most sense. Then east bound buses could access it fairly easy and west bound buses could take the Empress yield to access the loop. Sadly, a light will still be needed but only on the westbound lanes to allow west bound buses to merge back into traffic but it would ideally be a demand driven light with a maximum threshold. That would likely have a lower overall impact on traffic.

I guess it's not the way the bus crosses Portage that is my issue, it's the detour in itself. Surely it would add 5 minutes to every trip from St. James to Downtown if a bus had to take the Empress loop to get to the north side of Portage and then back. All for very little benefit.

Unless I'm missing something.

Speaking of West End redevelopments, what is going on at the building across from Tech Voc on Notre Dame? I bus past it daily, and haven't thought to ask what it is.

My mom said she got to go on a tour of the Cookie factory when she was a student at Tec Voc. I was very jealous

The cutout was put in this past summer to allow buses to turn left on to Portage from the new U of W terminal, which has since been cancelled.

If I recall reading properly the cloverleaf was not the first choice, the fire station was suppose to go about a block away to the west where the old Texaco station was.

The city apparently took too long to decide on what type of station it wanted to build and some of the land next to that lot that was also required was sold to somebody else, and the city did not want to pay more to buy that land back.

The other one that gets me is the traffic light on North Bound Main @ the Disraeli.

Again, there's no cross traffic to wait for.

Couldn't they have thrown up a pedestrian corridor instead to help the drunks cross from the Manitoba Museum to the soup kitchens?

I have to agree.

I don't know jack about urban planning, but placing the firehall on that cloverleaf seems like a really bad idea.

Sort of like building a stadium way out in the burbs, and then not connecting it to the half built rapid transit line to no where.

Unless things have changed with the redevelopment of the bridge it only use to go red when the push to cross button was activated.

I guess you could have people walk by going east or south and push the button with no intention of going north on Main St.

Maybe that's how it was designed, but i routinely come to a stop at that light for no reason.

Observation #2..

Man, does Chinatown ever look sad these days. I finally opened my eyes and saw Shanghai gone.

I wonder how many decades that will sit as an empty lot?

No longer. It now just cycles on a timer like a normal light and traffic has to stop for no reason.

For a "Chinatown", ours looks pretty bleak.

It is kind of ironic that there is this preconception passed around by everyone that the city loves to throw traffic lights up where ever they can, and now they are popping up at non-intersections. Another ridiculous one is the red light for the Osborne Bridge. I myself am a cyclist and find that it is really inefficient that 1) the cyclist has to wait 30-60 seconds for the light to turn green to cross, and 2) traffic on Osborne is completely halted for what is usually only one cyclist/pedestrian at a time. This too is for 30 or so seconds.

I bus through "chinatown" 5 days a week and it... is... depressing..... It feels like its a mix of things that should be somewhere in the suburbs and abandoned rotting buildings. It may be my most disliked part of downtown (if they really do fill in a few of those surface lots on graham then chinatown will without a doubt be the bottom of my list)

The area has a TON of potential with a number of beautiful old buildings. Would be nice if some effort was put into it.

As it is a right turn and I don't think there is a sign prohibiting it, could one do a right turn on red after coming to a full stop?

The news about the Canada Bread plant conversion is positive. While it receives very little attention, there are some good things going on in the West End.

Another dumb set of lights is at Princess @ Rupert.

Is there really THAT much traffic that you couldn't just have a stop sign for those on Rupert?
