Just my 2 cents on the NFL. They're not coming back. I think we've all seen this movie before. We also know the ending. We know the reasons for the NFL to constantly have LA on the radar, and it's not for LA's benefit. It's for their own and how they can literally rape the taxpayers of small towns like Jacksonville, Buffalo, St. Louis, etc., with the pretense that unless they fork over the dough they'll lose their team to LA. Can we get a list of the NFL proposals in LA? It's not funny because it's so extensive. As far as I'm concerned LA should move on without the NFL, and LA is actually above the NFL. For the most part LA knows that, which is why it's not financing any stadiums. But for kicks, here are some proposed sites for the NFL. City of Industry, Downtown Southpark (twice), Coliseum (repeatedly), rail yard, Dodger Stadium (like a million times), Hollywood Park (repeatedly), Carson (also repeatedly), Rosebowl (repeatedly), Platinum Triangle (repeatedly), Irwindale (and their 10 million paycheck). As usual, as soon as the NFL gets press and acts interested in a particular site, it pits that site against another in the region. LA needs to just move on on the idea of an NFL team.

Who needs to move on? Most people in LA are not working themselves up over the NFL. But I disagree with your post. The NFL will be coming back. And it will probably be the Rams.

Wholeheartedly agree. I think LA has been fine without the NFL....arguably it has thrived without it. Hopefully they work with some new companies...rebuild the Convention Center, and add more hotel space for conventions. Hell with the NFL. Let them drop the stadium in Industry (never gonna happen) and with no taxpayer money and make them complete the full EIR that was waived before. The last of my good will for this project has fled.

Check out this commentary in the LA Times Sports page today about Anschutz and AEG. This is one of the more interesting quotes:

For the first time since we became a pro-football-free zone, we have somebody who won't raise his eyes and tilt his head back when speaking of, and to, the NFL.

There are lots of rich and powerful people in the NFL. Few are richer or more powerful than Anschutz, oilman, developer and financier of the L.A. Live hot spot that has enlivened our city.

Anschutz almost never gives interviews. Thursday, he gave several, including one to the sports editor and business editor of The Times. He likes to deal with bosses. The in-between people just make noise.

In my previous life of coat-and-tie bossdom, I sought an interview with him during a phone conversation. He said no. I knew he played tennis and so did I. I challenged him to a match. I win, he sits for an interview. I lose, I go away forever. He liked the approach, would have done it, but he had a broken arm.

I don't pretend to know him. Few do. I do know he is a tough guy, and now he is our tough guy.

Finally, we are able to swim with the sharks.

Ava Little Tokyo from earlier this morning. They're really moving on this one. A lot more activity on this site and the 2nd phase to the south, where trucks were lined up down Los Angeles St., hauling dirt away from the site.

They've put up a lot more rebar since earlier in the week. Thanks for the pic!

8th and Hope

A couple blocks down, 8th and Grand. Carmel seems to have a never-ending stream of dump trucks carrying dirty off the lot.

9th and Olive.

Courtyard Marriott/Residence Inn

Avant, Flower Street view. Now up to the fourth floor, with three more to go.

Great shots, blackcat! There's a fair amount of construction activity going on downtown again. Starting to feel a little like 2007 again.

One thing that's different is that back then downtown was looking to reach the much talked about "tipping point" where it made economic sense for various types of retail to open downtown. Now I get the feeling that downtown has already arrived and that this current wave is heralding a new era where downtown is about to explode with all types of investment.

Yeah...hopefully this doesn't work out. The very presence of MCJ and the adjacent Twin Towers facility is an obstacle for development around Union Station.

http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_22807247/sheriff-proposes-almost-1-billion-new-jail

Sheriff Lee Baca proposes almost $1 billion new jail to replace downtown facility

Quote:
With the inmate population steadily increasing, Sheriff Lee Baca will ask the Board of Supervisors Tuesday to study replacing the dilapidated and violence-plagued Men's Central Jail with a $932.8-million high-tech facility, and consider relying more on electronic monitoring devices and other alternatives to incarceration.

The proposal at this stage is to hire a contractor to prepare a conceptual design and environmental impact review.

In a letter to the board, Baca and county chief executive officer William Fujioka said it was "critical" to begin the process of replacing the aging MCJ with a more efficient facility that would hold high-security and medical inmates.

The proposed new jail would be built on the site of the half-century-old MCJ in downtown Los Angeles. It is envisioned to house up to 3,500 high-security and medical inmates in two towers.

It would be built where Men's Central Jail currently is.

That is hilarious.

Sadly, I was just reading this article on Equity Residential that talks about projected rising rents and wondering how long I'll be able to continue to live downtown. http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/meet-...69d71e6-8dbf-11e2-9d71-0019bb2963f4.html

Brudy, you might want to check into the apartments owned by the Related Companies. I used to work for a division of Related and they usually reserve 20% of their developments for affordable housing. Affordable housing is not Section 8 or government housing but for people who work in the area but are not making extremely high wages...teachers, police etc. I know the new development by the Broad museum will offer it. I also know when the Blackstone lofts opened they offered it as well. And, you can check the LAHD website as well.

Brigham with a nice update on One Santa Fe's construction progress.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the potential tie-in to a future Red/Purple line station in the adjacent maintenance yard (shown in both of the renderings below). Of course, the population density in the Arts District isn't quite to the point where it could sustain a station yet, but perhaps by the time the Westside Subway extension is nearing completion.

That would be so cool!

I'm surprised nobodys mentioned that suddenly Wilshire Grand is like 1/2 the size it was just a couple weeks ago. When viewing from BoA corner at 7th & Fig a lot of the mass is gone !
