i just feel like too many north american cities have these weird siding houses right in the city limits.
O-KAY... Not sure I got all that but I think we've come to an understanding?

Who builds walkups anymore, btw? Who would want to build a walk up when you can build a building with an elevator? Furthermore, why would Calgary demolish one of its most historic neighborhoods so that we can satisfy urbanists from Montreal? trust me, that area is already plenty urban, and 14th street and Kensington Avenue do a great job of concentrating to high rise and low rise living of the area. Some of those houses that, according to Kool, need to be demolished for walkups are from the 1800s. So I don't think that will happen.

Like I said before, the river cuts off that end of DT from the rest. That's why there's such a sudden drop off. The Beltline on the other side of DT int his pic continues the density of the core for quite a distance longer. The area in this pic is currently experiencing alot of infill duplex / 4plexes and narrower sfh's.

i guess it's like calgary's south shore. i'd like to see what an inner-city street in calgary looks like. preferably with the bow looming over it for that "calgary metropolis" feeling.

It's actually a couple kilometers north of the Beltline.

That's still Kensington (West Hillhurst I think). Very much inner city and should definitely be denser. Like you said though, this is a small, young city so we aren't there yet, but we will get there.

The single family stuff in that picture doesn't bother me that much to be honest - if there was more of a solid street wall on 14th street in that area with more residential infill it would be great.

I don't want this to turn into a Calgary thing, but stuff like the links below is what has always bothered me about inner-city Calgary. New projects are much better but lets get rid of the 90s infill in the belt line... For some reason the strips of lawn in front of apartment buildings seems very suburban.

http://goo.gl/maps/YWVMn This should be in the burbs.

Probably more than 5, more likely 10-15 years before it becomes substantially built out.

Very, very few of them. If any in that immediate picture. Kensington was pretty much nothing at the turn of the century. Most of the older houses in that area weren't all that great, hence the multitude of 50's/60's infill. Calgary is one of the few places where I find the new infill houses better than almost all of the old.

I dunno man. I love that Calgary has lots of grass and trees in the inner city.

I feel like a few of these threads on here have basically just become "defend your city" threads.

I like the grass in the area, keeps everything nice and green, one of my favourite things about the area actually. Those buildings do look very much like suburban multi-family though.

Well I said there are some, and I wouldn't have made a claim like that if I wasn't sure. So yes there are some. 1800s, early 1900s. They're not getting torn down for —.

No matter how you feel, Montreal has over 200 years on Calgary. What more needs to be said?

It's Vancouver, taken from the Spanish Banks.
