My main point, however, was that the journal article (in a broad, general sense that a small article allows) was not just some ridiculous fluff garbage, but rather accurately painted a picture of how quickly aspects of Pittsburgh have changed within the last decade (for the positive!) and how it has and is affecting my general demographic and our view of our own city. This is why I gave a devastating sad "sob story ancedote" so to illustrate that the one provided in the article is a realistic experience that many in my demographic in Pittsburgh have experienced and can relate to, especially those roughly 900,000 "suburbanites with multigenerational roots".

THe reason I brought that up is it's included in the jurisdiction of Pittsburgh's Metropolitan Planning Organization (Southwestern PA Commission). Considering the population and I guess the travel patterns of the population, it's no wonder it's not part of any urban area classified by the US Census Bureau...

Keeping with my Houston tradition of driving around the city looking for construction I did that yesterday here. I dont really know the city that well yet, so I may have some of the neighborhoods wrong.


Restoration in North Oakland.



Tons of reconstructions going on in East Liberty. The two buildings in the middle are being restored.

New construction at UPMC or maybe its the university of pittsburgh, not quite sure.


Restoration in Uptown or the Bluff, not sure of the name of this neighborhood either. I think it was on Forbes Ave.


Another restoration across from the u/c PNC Bank headquarters.

Salvation Army/rehab Centre on Carson St.

Loft conversion of old school in the Hill and new townhomes or whatever being built all over the place around the school on Reed St and Miller St.






Im so happy to see all the restorations of old buildings going on. In Houston they would just be like, oh well, tear it down and replace it three story fenced suburban condos.

Thanks for those shots, photoLith. The East Liberty project is definitely one of my favorites. The Highland Building restoration/renovation is, in my opinion, going to push East Liberty over the edge from an in-progress to a full-blown booming neighborhood. So nice to see those new places rising on The Hill as well!

You are exactly right. Most of the people in the county live along the river. Steubenville, Toronto, Mingo Junction and Wintersville make up most of the county's population and they have a direct connection to Pittsburgh on the highway. Those are the Jefferson County commuter communities.

Well most of them do commute to Morgantown and the University is the main reason.
