That's a good point John Martin, it 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 every year, and Comrade hit the nail on the head, for me at least. I get my hopes up. Next year I'll be wiser. And it's not just the liquor laws either. The clamp they continue to put on planned parenthood and women's health was tightened this year as well.
But those rants are for another place. X 96 had Senator Valentine (the champion of the Zion Curtain) on it's program this morning, and they were rather aggressive with him. Its worth a listen to those who are interested. You'll find it on their website under Radio Form Hell.

Agreee, I hate the location of the Rio Tinto soccer stadium. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful facility, but bad location. If you look at Seattle or Portland and the location of thier stadiums and how they're walking distance from the city center...it's no surprise that it adds to the passion of the fan base and really marks the SEATTLE and PORTLAND names on the club name. I was watching a Portland Timbers vs NY Rebulls match last week on tv. The game was in Portland, and from what I could tell, the Portland stadium atmosphere and crowd are light years ahead of RSL and any other club of the MLS. Seattle is also right there with Portland as well. Go Timbers!!

While doing a Google search I came across an old tower diagram that I did back in 2007. Six years later lets update....

A list of new tower possibilities.
List of towers in Salt Lake City, Lehi, Pleasant Grove and Provo that we could see within the next 10 years or less.


1. Mystery Glass Tower 35-40 stories Turned out to be the planned PAC Tower for the Theater development on main that will be around 21-25-stories. Not as tall.
2. Frank Ghery Lehi Hotel Tower 45-stories at 450 FT. Pipe-dream, never happened.
3. Wasatch Partner Tower 33-stories Not sure if this one is still planned of what.
4. Cowboy Partner Tower 1 or Social Hall Tower 40-stories at over 375 FT. Tower 8 at CCC looks to be around 20-25 stories. My how our towers have shrink.
5 World Trade Center Utah South Tower 25-30 stories Maybe oneday, but for now UWTC office is at the former Eagle Gate Tower.
6. Viper's 40-story Condominium Tower The tower Viperlord's uncle was talking about. 40-stories. I don't really remember this one, but I guess Viperlord said something way back then about this hence the name Viper tower?
7. City Creek Center Condominium Tower 1 32-stories Hey, this one happened. YAY.
8. Market Station Tower 27-stories Still in planning........I hope.
9. 222 South Main 21-stories This one also came to pass.
10. 22-story Condominium Tower ( Note this might be the same as Number 11. ) If this is part of the Lehi project then it never happened. Pipe Dream.
11. Lehi Condominium Tower 1 around 20-25 stoires Pipe Dream
12. Lehi Condominium Tower 2 around 20-25 stories Pipe Dream
13. City Creek Center Condominium Tower 2 19-stories Come on Cascade, lets get her done.
14. World Trade Center Tower North around 10-15 stories maybe one day in a much later phase with UWTC.
15. Cowboy Partners Tower 2 17-stories or shorter Think this is the disappointing 5-story condo building Viperlord posted on here the other day on 200 E. and 100 S.
16. Embassy Hotel in Pleasant Grove 14-stories Never happen.
17. City Creek Center Condominium Tower 4 14-stories This one turned out to be a office building at 6-stories on South Temple between Zion Bank Tower and Eagle Gate tower now World Trade Center.
18. RDA State Property Towers 180 FT around 13-stories?
19. Salt Lake City Federal Courthouse Tower 10-stories This one's almost done.
20. Provo's Zions Bank Financial Center 10-stories Finish at 9-stories.
21. City Creek Center Condominium Tower 6 10-stories Done...
22. City Creek Center Condominium Tower 7 10-stories and done.
23. City Creek Condominium Towers on Main 8-stories and done.
24. Sugarhouse Mix-use Towers 6-7 stories The sugar-hole is finally moving along, only it's all housing now, not office.

Ok that was fun looking back. Looks like only half ( if that ) have been built. So some are dead, while others we still have hope for.

Seattle doesn't even have their own stadium. They have to share with the seahawks.

They have to use the football stadium because the Seattle Sounders have about 40,000 fans come to their home games. Having a regular size, and average MLS stadium like RSL's would be too small for them. The Sounders, every year have the best crowd and the best attendance of the entire MLS. Again, a stadium the size of Rio Tinto would be too small for Seattle.

Right. In 2012, Seattle averaged 43,144 fans. To put that into perspective, RSL averaged 19,087 last season.

Though when you compare metro sizes between Seattle and Salt Lake you have a lot more people to fill a 40,000+ venue. also for a stadium with 20,000-21,000 seats filling it to 19,000+ is considered full. Though, I do think having it downtown would have been much better than in Sandy, but Sandy was willing to give free money to have it built there.

My model was about 515' tall. UPAC plus 20-25 stories of office highrise above.

Here is the current design of the portion of the UPAC building that faces Main Street. I like it. Plus, it looks like it is taking the vertical line of the highrise above and turning it horizontal to play a trick by not going to the ground but leaving it open to glass below. It looks good. For those of you, who are a bit skeptical right now, the design of the office tower will play a huge role in the overall design, too. I believe it will be designed by SOM, and yes, I do believe this will be our new tallest, even if there are only 20 to 25 stories of office floors, and as long as they are going to be avove the UPAC.

I hope your right Orlando about the height of the tower, that would be faaantasic! Regarding the preliminary design of the UPAC at street level, I also like it a lot. At that particular location, sweeping L.A. Disney Hall type lines would seem bizarre IMO. I think the glass tranparency at the street and to the left makes for an excellent combination of lines with both the upper right, and also the surrounding structures.

All indications from the public input meetings is that the theater lobby would share just a portion of the base of the tower, as is shown in the rendering. The theater lobby won't extend all the way to the corner of 100 S and Main. The tower lobby will be just like any other tower lobby and the 2nd floor of the tower will start probably about the same height as the 2nd floor of 222 starts. There may be some connections that connect the lobby's but the indication at the meetings wasn't that the tower lobby would be the same height as the theater lobby.

So while it would love for the PAC tower to be the tallest, I don't really think it is going to be. If it's 22 stories I suspect it will be similar in total height to 222 S Main. I'm hoping that they will go at least 25 with it thus making it that much taller than 222 height wise and visually.

The model and the latest floor plan both seem to indicate a change from the previous floor plan, which may be what you are referring to, Future Mayor. Check out the beginning of the video when it shows the latest floor plan. You can also see part of the latest floor plan in the top right of the above image. The winter garden separates the tower core and the main lobby and performance volume. And, in the model. the winter garden appears to go full height of the UPAC, and the tower seems to cantilever over the winter garden. I'll try to post the floor plan that was shown in the video.

I was hoping for a more deconstructivist take for the theater. Something that makes it pop out from the other architecture. It looks good in the rendering... but doesn't scream "arts venue" to me.

Really? They killed the Convention Center Hotel? Great, how many more years is this going to set this project back? So annoying that it's 2013 and Salt Lake still doesn't have a Convention Hotel. No wonder we remain as Denver's 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 as long as we keep losing business to them and other near by cities who have the hotels.

SB267, sponsored Rep. Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, passed the Senate on Monday but failed in the House with a 35-39 vote.

"We are losing millions and millions of dollars a year and thousands of jobs because we do not have a convention space adequate enough," Wilson said. "The expectation is that this hotel should generate $600 million over the next couple of decades."

The bill would have implemented a 20-year, post-performance property tax for the developers of the hotel, similar to the rebate given to companies such as Adobe that have relocated and invested in the state...

[Just A Thought]

The comedic irony to this is that politics and business ARE connected. If I was a world class international hotel I would take that signal from the hill as a warning flag that Grand America gets the political breaks here in SLC and and take my money to a city with more of an eye on the future and balance.

It's possible the hill just kicked out the OR convention and lost a great taxpayer investment in the deal. These people are kinda weird. Sadly Utah is simply run by an elitist self interested group that do not appear to care much about the city or the small businesses here. I feel really sorry for SLC today.
