What if you cannot whistle????? Lights are fine, the way they work, well come on............they should have been motion sensor activated lights. And it needs A LOT MORE to make it actually stand out.

But we can waste 2.5 million or whatever it was on lights? Yet we have no money to fix anything else that would improve the city. How about just fixing some sidewalks, or PLANT SOME TREES......

That's the city press release for Market St Streetscaping.

It's not just $2.5 million for lights. Includes sidewalk widening/rehab, benches, planters and some other stuff. But yeah, $2.5 million sees a bit high, but that much cash doesn't go very far these days. It costs $100,000 just for the contractor to mobilize and de-mobilize. Concrete prices are sky high. Never mind all those stainless steel poles, etc.

Its not the lights I guess I am not happy about. It is the FACT, St James pulled this off in the 1990s, with their fake trees, that worked for what, a year, the ugly things now sit there as poled with branches and old dead lights. And to think they ripped out the LIVE trees for this. I just do not want to see this happen all over again.

And honestly, even though they are not finished, that area needs a boat load of lights to make it a destination of arts. Not just a few whistling posts. I would love to see the area lit up with all shades of colour. And heck throw in some sculptures and the like. It is an arts district right?

I am sure RRC can jump in on this and help out with displays of sorts. Maybe plant a bunch of Spruce to hide the City Hall, as that would be an amazing improvment.

And my earlier comment about trees, I was not just talking about that area, I am talking about all the trees that get hit or broke by vandals of cars or plows, they never seem to get replaced. Then I go an drive down Chief Peg and see the over planting of trees. This is how the city should be doing things all over. We are noted for our canopy are we not.

Just this year alone 4700 thus far Elms have been removed, last year 5500 were removed. I will not tell you how many were replaced as you would cringe.

Not sure how many of you are NHL fans, but did you notice the fake lighted trees in front of Florida Panthers Arena. Those stand out, those look cool. NOW I am not saying Palms, but we need to think out of the box in a larger scale.

Agree about the real trees. Winnipeg has a huge problem wit losing tress not only due to people, but the Dutch Elm disease. This years budget was doubled by the city to help plant more tress and take care of the ones we have. They're trying to replace the old elms with some type of hybrid ash tree? I believe. That is more resistant to disease.

I have posted passionately on the topic of trees before many times, and it seems my comments went unheard. I agree with you completely 100% BlueNote. We shouldn't so easily give up on our beautiful canopy. We really are one of a kind when it comes to our canopy.

Random art is something the city shouldn't be in charge of though, it's often stuff that is chosen by a committee and looks weird, like Thunder Bay's weird face-on-harp-bridge-ghosts thing or "the bent poles" at the waterfront. In any art competition, the really cool stuff gets ignored.

Things like the concrete moose things that appear randomly in June and the back alley murals are all grassroots. One part of town has mini-paintings on duct tape stuck on a lot of street light posts.

Could be something, or could be nothing - but I walked past a drill rig parked on the empty lot just north of 201 Portage.

Could be there as part of a geotechnical investigation for a future development...

There has been talk of a multi-use building there anchored by a five star hotel. Anyone else hear that?
