from the one angle that you get from the jacques-cartier bridge, yeah: montreal has great texture. but coming in from the west, one could be forgiven for thinking that it looks like calgary in the '80s, and that some "mcdevelopments" could actually liven things up.

Tor/Van have added a staggering amount of highrises to their skyline in the last decade but a larger skyline doesn't neccesarily mean it's a better skyline. Tell me, has there been even ONE building over 25 stories in Tor/Van in the last decade that is not blue/green glass?

I assume you are referring to city limits only? Montreal is generally thought of hitting one million in 1930 or so. Toronto was around 800k at the time. There was a fair amount of development outside of city limits in both cities.

yup. imo, Metropolitan areas weren't as relevant until post war (suburban boom) when the cores started to hollow out of most cities in North America. (and Buffalo metro hit 1M in the 1940s)

Calgary needs one of these! although we have a couple much shorter versions of a "flatiron"-esque type building (one in Chinatown and one in Kensington-that I can think of)

I love that building as well. We're getting a couple of buildings of a similar style in St. John's soon. One is triangular - but has that basic look. The other, though, is closer to a proper flatiron building - but, of course, very stunted. It's only 5/6 floors on the uphill side, maybe 2/3 more than that on the downhill side. I'm so excited for both.

And the seaboard cities are quite doeable by car as well..Under 8 hours which isn't bad for an extended 5 day long weekend..I mean flying is faster, but by the time you check in, board,land,etc. It's still a four hour ordeal.

Right off the top of my head - The Uptown and 1 St. Thomas in Toronto. There are definitely more.

That is the MUHC's (McGill University Health centre) mega-hospital project. Built on a former rail yard, the $1.5 billion complex includes the consolidation of several smaller hospitals, including the Shriner's children hospital, the neurological institute, the Royal Vic, the chest institute and others.

It will become one of this continent's most advanced research / teaching hospitals.

It has been in the national news lately because its former manager, Arthur Porter, has been involved in some shady business.
