These sorts of issues are tricky but he's definitely crossed a line with the flag and his reference to Halal, etc. He needs to be made aware that this sort of behaviour is unacceptable. Anyway, as you said, the market will take care of him one way or another. He's obviously a very stupid man if he thinks this will help his business.

While I don't agree with his methods, you have to admire his knack for getting free publicity. The value of all of this press coverage is probably in the tens of thousands of dollars. Before the last bout with this guy at his mountain store he was on the verge of bankruptcy and now business is so good he can afford to open a second location. Like the old saying goes this guy might be crazy, but he's crazy like a fox.

By the way, I have had his food a couple of times and it's only so-so.

Hamilton is home to commercial beer brewing again.

Well, about a beer keg’s worth anyway. Augusta Street’s The Ship launched its own brew Thursday called the Ship’s Rations.

Not since Lakeport closed in April 2010 has beer been brewed to sell in the city.

Bar owner Tate Graham and professional brewer Victor North collaborated on the suds. They brewed two 30-litre batches of an India pale ale style beer in the small pub’s kitchen. Its bitter, crisp, dry qualities are popular among fans of craft-style brewing.

“I think we’re the first brew pub in Hamilton in recent history. At least as far back as anyone I’ve talked to can remember,” said Graham.

India pale ale was developed in England in the 1700s and sent to India to fortify troops in the colony. The empty ships came back to the mother land with exotic ingredients of Asia.

In a nod to that history, Graham and North added ginger, molasses and Chinese sugar crystals to their recipe. It is 6.5 per cent alcohol by volume and unfiltered and unpasteurized.

North is a brewer at the Toronto location of the 3 Brewers and lives in Hamilton. He thinks the city will embrace its new homegrown pints.

“There is great interest all things local and craft here, small scale and do-it-yourself. There is such an ambitious mood of building things here.”

Graham, who moved to Hamilton from Prince Edward County in 2006, bought his Augusta Street building and opened The Ship in 2009.

He started with three craft taps and says he “had to really sell it to people. Now people are coming in to ask, ‘What can I get that I can’t get at the LCBO?’”

Graham constantly rotates his 12 taps and has kept track of 122 brews that have come through his door.

On tap alongside the Ship’s Rations right now is Stereovision by Flying Monkeys of Barrie, Boneshaker by Amsterdam Brewing and Legendary Oddity by Muskoka.

The Ship’s Rations will be featured at the Beer4Boobs breast cancer fundraiser at The Casbah on April 14 and will be entered in brewing competitions.

The two plan to keep brewing, with Graham eventually learning the craft for himself.

North even created a large painting on canvas featuring The Ship’s Ration’s logo and a tweak on the city’s motto of Together Aspire Together Achieve.

In The Ship’s version it reads Together Aspire Together Drink.

It was a packed house at the ship last night. There is a voracious hunger (thirst) in this city for local beer. You know, I'm kinda excited about the Dundas brewery but whoever manages to open the doors of a microbrewery in downtown Hamilton will make a killing.

To drown my sorrows I went next door to Winking J and had a wonderful Matador (Flying Monkeys). At 11% abv, I took a taxi home.

Might head over to Stowaway for their opening tonight.

There are a bunch of beer geeks here in Hamilton who post on Bar Towel. "Team Hamilton" meets up occasionally. Let's plan a meetup.

I was there as well. It was a pretty good beer, not the best I've ever had, but I enjoyed it. It had some ginger tones to it, which I enjoyed.

I'm missing the opening of Stowaway tonight, unfortunately, but I hope to show up sometime this weekend.

The Ships Rations is a hybrid of old and new- with a twist. It shares some traits with old English IPAs, specifically the sparkling carbonation and the dry crisp finish. It is like modern IPAs in that it makes exclusive use of recently developed strains of high-alpha acid hops, specifically Citra & Simcoe. But it takes a lighter hand on hop character than most modern IPAs, which allows some interesting special ingredients to be incorporated. These exotic ingredients are Ginger, Molasses and Chinese Sugar Crystals. These ingredients are reminiscent of the Far East and the English colonial period- when spices, sugar, and molasses were loaded onto English ships- ships that returned loaded with Ale. The ginger helps to create a powerful aroma of cardamom on the nose (putting the “I” in IPA) and is perhaps more felt than tasted -as it creates a synergistic effect with the hops- increasing the perception of bitterness and leaving a pleasant, almost hot, bitter burn on the palette. The molasses add color and complexity, and the Chinese sugar crystals help to lighten the body and create a rather dry beer. The Ships Rations is approx. 6.5 percent alcohol by volume and approx. 70 IBUs. It is unfiltered, unpasteurized and unavailable anywhere else!

The Ship- Dog watch, in marine or naval terminology, is a watch, a period of work duty or a work shift, between 1600 and 2000 (4pm and 8pm). This period is split into two, with the 'first' dog watch from 1600 to 1800 (4pm to 6pm) and the 'last' dog watch from 1800 to 2000 (6pm to 8pm) (there is no 'second' dog watch). Each of these watches is half the length of a standard watch.
