They're doing it all around the periphery and in the core. So I'm sure you're right about the elevator banks, but seems they're also adding strength all around.

Now I feel silly saying it is 'stronger'... but pressing on, is this stiffening the structure or adding greater load bearing capacity? Would this be because of: a conservative engineering design; greater demand on structure from new cladding above; correcting issues that may have already been present and this is a good time to fix them; or something else entirely?

The team doing the work seems to be very efficient in minimizing disruption to the parkade. They're enclosing the workspace in temporary walls, doing the work, then removing the walls in a matter of a few weeks.

Yep it's a good construction team. It's always tough working in an active mall/parking lot and they are doing a great job so far.

As for the reason, well lets just call it future proofing. Some of it is needed for changes to the building due to code/new uses however there is a bit of unused density on the site...

I remember that very clearly as a teen, you can note the 'cut-out' on the upper level of the Howe St facade which served as an outdoor seating area for the 'Marine Room' cafeteria. Also note the impeccable maintenance of the building by EATON'S in the day.

It really wasn't that bad of a building before the addition. I kinda like it actually.

How much unused density? Enough for another floor or two?

Apart from being the 80s (and looking a bit Stars Wars-ish) - I wonder why the addition departed so much from the original design?

The soil layer would have been deeper if they intended to grow something more substantial like wheat or grass. Given the shallowness of the stuff, it's probably mostly just weeds and moss.

It was just weeds and moss, AFAIK, But over the years the forest of moss practically went Amazonian. Which is ironic, when you think that Amazon passed on taking space in this building.

Strange how there's a void space under the slanted part of the roof (storage?).
The steel trusses look like the same type used in warehouse buildings (ie Cave-in-Foods) - so maybe that's why it's not strong enough for a green roof (but would additional struts shore it up?) Kinda cool to think these are the same girders and trusses seen in the pic posted by spm2013.

The black marks on the precast panels look like brackets for hoisting the panels down.
That could be sky through the structure(?) EDIT: That IS sky through the mesh.
Note that the framing for the backlit spandrels have been competely removed.

WHEN: Beginning on Sunday, March 17, 2013

WHY: Ledcor Construction will be continuing work on the exterior façade removal phase of the 725 Granville project.

IMPACT: There will be jack hammering taking place to complete the removal of the atrium located on the northeast corner of the building. This procedure will take place behind the blue screen and may result in a temporary increase in noise levels. However, the removal of the pre-cast panels and glazing will take place only during the evenings so there should not be any impact to tenants.
Access to Granville Street through the TD Plaza will remain fenced off while this work is being done and will be closed for the duration of the project. We will be providing regular updates and further details as this project unfolds
