I also went by those EastSide Apartments yesterday as well. Good size building to an area that needs more mid-rises. I hope one day we could maybe taller buildings along 400 South with ground level retail.

the old foursquare church at roughly 1000 south Jefferson St. has been demolished. I guess it had foundation structural issues. Its been rumored that a multi family development will be built on the site.

That's a shame. It was a cool little neighborhood church.

I drove by the demolished buildings on the SW corner of 17th S and 9th E today. I appears that they are starting some serious earth moving, and not simply grading. I will try to get a picture in the next day or two.

I agree Comrade, it was a cool little church. Unfortunately, it was a cool sinking little church.

Also it has some interesting things recorded on the title. It was formerly an LDS Church which was subsequently sold to the Four Square Church. On the title it states that the building itself can only be used as a church. The current owners of the property initially considered remodeling the building as a multi-family residential project but were not able to as the building can only be used as a church. The proposed project is now a new apartment development.

Cyber security firm to bring 250 jobs to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — FireEye, a cyber security threat protection firm headquartered in California, is expanding into Utah and is expected to bring approximately 250 new jobs.

The announcement was made Tuesday by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Economic Development Corporation of Utah.

FireEye entered into an agreement with the state that is expected to bring more than $14 million in new state tax revenue and approximately $152 million in new state wages over the lifetime of the agreement. The wages are expected to be at least 125 percent of Salt Lake County’s average annual wage, including benefits.

The company also is expected to invest more than $2 million in a new facility, the location of which has yet to be determined.

Ok so somewhere within the Salt Lake valley I know that much. My guess, Draper? since that's where all the new high tech jobs are moving too it seems.

A really interesting showdown is going down in the legislature right now about the convention center hotel. A legislator from Draper is proposing a bill that from what I can tell would help finance a significant portion of the convention center hotel. It is going to be discussed tomorrow in committee. This is in contrast to a bill already put forward by Valentine from Orem (I shiver whenever I hear his name) which prevents public funds from supporting a convention center hotel. That bill passed committee and is now up to the senate to decide. It will be interesting to see which, if either bill passes. Hopefully it is the guy from Draper's bill. His bill makes me a little hopeful since a Republican from Draper would be one of the last people I would think would propose funding the convention center hotel.

So the bill that supports funding a convention center hotel passed committee (at least as far as I can tell on the state website) by a 6-1 vote. So now there is a bill in favor of funding the convention center hotel and a resolution against funding it (SR1, which passed out of committee 3-1-3, so it is hard to tell by the committee's votes which will be more popular). One interesting thing about the the bill in favor of funding the hotel: the six that voted in favor were from Tooele, West Valley, Sanpete County, South Jordan, Davis, and Layton, and the lone dissenting vote was from Salt lake.

The SW corner. There was an old gas station that was recently used as an emissions place, I think, and the building where Abode was located.

Here is my question... Has anyone actually expressed any interest in building this hotel? I always read arguments about funding for convention space and location... But someone actually has to step foreword to construct and operate the place..

It is my understanding that before the most recent study at least 12 developers from around the country had expressed interest and desire to build a convention hotel.

They all stated that roughly 1/3 (approx $100 Million) of the cost associated with the hotel would need to come from the government in either direct payment, tax rebates or deferments. That is why the last study wasn't about the need for the hotel but for how to pay for it without taking money from tax payers.

12 no, but 2 might not be bad. One at 1000 rooms and another at 800 rooms. That would go a long way to attracting even more conventions than the 1000 rooms would.

Concrete is poured for most of the first floor, and some of the upper floors. Some areas have wood going up as well. I try to swing by there today and snap a picture.
