Workers are erecting steel scaffolding / hoarding to protect the sidewalk - so it finally looks like the panels will start coming down.

Here's what's left of the "arch" in front of the rotunda. Pic by me today.
Still no panels down, although the hoarding walkway on Granville is now open, so that's progress, anyways.

A co-worker pointed out that windows have been removed from the rotunda (hadn't noticed since I usually leave after dark) - so I went down to take a pic:

I'll try to keep an eye out for progress as things seem to have picked up (on the exterior).

I was watching them do that too. It seems like they are using the crane to place that piece of plywood in front of the window and then breaking it into pieces from the inside.

Demo work can be fascinating in its own way. I like how it's an acceptable form of "destruction", which is really rare in our society.

Just waiting for them to start taking marble cladding off the Granville side.
The hoarding on Granville severely hampers your ability to jaywalk.

I guess the scaffoding is to remove the window framing.

They wil have to demolish/cut away part of the concrete floor slab when squaring off the rotunda - probably to the straight beam seen in the previous pic then attach the corners (maybe in steel).

what was the top floor originally with the windows? I don't think I ever seen windows up there!

That was an addition to the retail space of the store in the 1980s.
Not sure if the windows opened to the retail floor though on that level.

Interesting.
The DPB application says they can't do a green roof because the structure can't support it
(although the base structure was designed for one more additional storey)
- guess the limitation is due to the steel structure addition.
Also interesting that the base building looks to be concrete (based on the rotunda).
Guess the addition is steel because it is lighter. TD Tower is also steel.

Spandrel panels above one of the alcoves has been removed.
Note the fluorescent tube sockets and ballasts that formerly backlit the spandrel panels.
Major missed opportunity not relighting them in the 1999-ish renovation.

Does anyone else have problems with Imageshack randomly rotating pics?

For the past several weeks the pillars in the parking levels underneath have been undergoing a 'thickening'. The finished work has added a wall's width (up to a foot) of concrete and rebar.
