Again, the redline has been very succesful, at being what it was designed to be. In fact, the biggest complaint most people have had is that there's not enough of it (_more_ frequency, _more_ cars).
If there's ever going to be a chance for urban rail in Austin, the red line is going to be one of the factors that makes it happen. The 2000 vote failed because suburbanites were _massively_ against it. Even M1EK admits this. Basically, their tax money (small percentage as it was) was going to a system that they saw no value in. The red line helps to make an urban rail system valuable to the suburbanites. Transit systems gain value as they connect or other transit systems (network effect). The best transit systems in the world (New York, etc.) have commuter train components.
