Hockey, and all sports, should operate the same way. Private ownership of facilities and people pay to play. If a family can't afford to play, they apply for subsidies through Sport Manitoba.
You do realize that every community center is actually owned by the City of Winnipeg and just operated by quasi arms length organizations?

Further, I think in all of Winnipeg there is a grand total of eight privately owned indoor rinks, four at the IcePlex, three at CanLan (Highlander) and MTS Centre. Everything else is City owned. What is commonly called a "City owned" rink are those that actually are not operated by a quasi arms length group such as a community centre board.

I was pleased to see the announcement of a field house, just disappointed that it is going to the rather privileged suburbs. I would have much rather seen a similar facility built at the Freight House site giving the economically disadvantaged from the inner city a chance to use it.

Notice how I said a step in the right direction, then I stated what that final step would be... I understand the business practice of the GCWCC, quite well actually. Further, CC's actually have to do some fundraising on their own. They don't get ALL of their money from taxes. They also have volunteers to operate the facility etc. As I said, they are much less bureaucratic and waste a lot less money because they actually have to work for it.

Good for you for stepping up for your local club, I think the way community clubs are run and funded right across the city is messed up.

Perhaps the reason the City underfunds all the CC's is that they compete with them all the time, both for funding and by repeating programs.

The City competes by running programs through the Leisure Guide, something that could (and should) let be organized by more local groups within the communities. They compete by operating arenas, more repeated services that is already being done by CC's.

If the City decreased funding in areas where they are repeating services they would be in a position to increase the funding to CC's, front line people who know the community's wants and needs far better than the bureaucrats.

But the problem is that the bureaucrats hold the council... They decrease funding to various groups then give them the same funding in the form of "capital grants". They are robbing Peter to pay Paul. That money that Council is "giving" CC's for their 2 big projects is nothing but the money that they cut from the CC's budgets 4 or 5 years ago. It's a bureaucratic savings plan, and it's a tool that councillors use to get re-elected.

This should probably be for the politics thread, but I will post it here. Despite my niavity, lack of knowledge, lack of "proper education" (as I have been to university and am currently still attending post-secondary), maturity, expertise, and general inability to succeed, I have let my passion allow me to believe that I should one day run for office, regardless of the likely failure.

Anyways, that being said, I have been slowly going over the city's budget in an attempt to create my own plan for how the city should be run. And what I have found astonishes me. I have made it through 1/8 of the city's released compensation disclosure form (which contains the salary for every civil servant, from the Janitor at your local CC to the Mayor himself) and I am, appalled at how much money is just thrown away.

To give you an idea of what I mean, there is a man who's title is "Manager of the decision making process" for the city clerks office. This man makes 114 000 dollars a year. Considering that the lowest salary in the clerks office -and by far the lowest considering it is a 10 000 jump to the next lowest- is 54 000 dollars, I would like to hope that they can all make their decisions on their own.

To conclude, 1/8th through the compensation sheet and I have managed to save 5.5 million dollars, without cutting a single job, or even touching current bloated policies that are in place (which I definitely intend to do, come the near future).

To stop this thread from derailing here are some bomber photos.

It's almost done...

They may not be the best, but they are up there in the top 3. And it is unfortunate for me to say that they have never won a Grey Cup in my lifetime. I was born the year following their last Grey Cup.

this is just a rumour, but whoever runs the Royal Albert's FB page (Jorgenson?) indicates that there are plans to open a "mini casino" in the St Charles Hotel.

Question, maybe vik can help. At the new U of W Fieldhouse, it says they accommodate baseball. So is that a full size baseball field? If so, that's awesome. I know it would be on the multi-use field, which sounds like it will be rather large.

Same deal at Dakota, I mean Jonathon Toews Community Centre

Is there any other places around with year round baseball? Full size.
