For now. The offer just wasn't competitive enough. The company wanted to pay her less than she makes now in a more expensive city. It just didn't make sense.

We'd still like to move out to LA if another opportunity was to present itself, and there is a lot going on in her field out there, so who knows?

We have always planned to purchase in Vancouver though, no matter where we end up.

Looks like the city is forcing Craft Beer Market to make significant changes to its plans in response to community concerns:

http://former.vancouver.ca/devapps/pc85w1st/documents/renoteltr.PDF

Huge reduction in outdoor seating. Closing the patio at 10pm during summer months sounds overly restrictive. Also I'm not sure why the city would agree to eliminating the entrance on the plaza side - the foot traffic would help animate the plaza and isn't the parking for the village accessed from the plaza side too?

So. If we get a bunch of local residents to vocally complain about ridiculously crowded patios, poor access and early closing hours, does that mean we can get the city to change regulations accordingly? Or is "responding to community concerns" always a completely one-sided affair?

Oh right, and they need to install clear plastic around the patio as a "noise barrier", so it's not much of a patio any more... Gosh people have such poor taste...

*Sigh*

I really don't understand why these people choose to live in the city. Plastic covers around the outdoor seating area? What the.....! Lawnmowers in the suburbs make more noise than a bunch of people eating and having a drink. I mean, these people realize that they will be the ones patronizing this place, right? They're cool with sitting on a patio, and enjoying the view through a thick plastic layer? It's this type of thing that makes me NOT want to purchase in this area.
Vancouver and a lot of Vancouverites just keep getting weirder and more thin-skinned.

If I were the restaurant I would walk away.
50 patio seats?
One dragon boat team coming over after practice (at the Creekside community centre) needs 20 seats.

Dude, every trip I have to Japan makes me realize this more.

Japan = real urban vibe / life

Vancouver = wannabe overpriced resort

Don't get me wrong I love Vancouver, but we seem to be over regulated where we should be more relaxed and under regulated / enforced where we should be more (such as regarding graffiti, vandalism, and littering).

I agree that the restaurant should play hard-ball. The City owns the building and are probably desperate to rent it out. I went to the Craft Beer Market open-house last Summer and there were a bunch of Vision city councillors there patting themselves on the back about how they had spent all this money restoring a heritage building and had now attracted an exciting tenant. I'm sure they would hate to see it fall apart now.

You know if people here acted like Japanese people we wouldn't have as many of these regulations. What causes these rules are idiots that think they need to celebrate their b-days/pick any other celebration by making as much noise as possible as they wait in line to get into a place, or as they leave. If that culture of douchebaggery came to an end then you'd see people stop complaining and rules eased up.
I'm not too worried about the patio being only 50seats, as what's likely to happen is it'll be revisited in a year and if it's in good standings then it'll be expanded. This is pretty common under the good neighbour policy.

Please excuse the profanity, but this decision is fucking disgusting. Seriously, I am furious. What could have been a fantastic landmark summer time destination will now just be another ho-hum restaurant. Reduction in patio seating from 214 to 50, all of which have to be under the canopy, because we don't want people to actually enjoy the sun. "Transparent acoustical barriers" because people sitting on a patio don't really want to feel like they are outside anyway. No access from Walter Hardwick ave side, because the restaurant didn't want the seawall walk-by traffic anyway. Oh, and no music and we close at 10pm because welcome to no fun city.

This is beyond ridiculous.

And that's the sound of a nail head being hit, if you will forgive the poor pun. What is it with the d-bag culture in Vancouver?

I don't think the d-bag culture is limited to Vancouver though, unfortunately it's all over N.A. and sadly it's even being exported to Europe. We are starting to see similar regulations being put in place there now because of this behaviour. It's sad that most of us have to pay the price because of those that are inconsiderate of others.

I take it you have never been to a Japanese bar after work?

I have a hard time keeping up with them when I am there!

The difference though is, even though they do get rowdy, Japanese do have a better understanding of TPO (time, place, occasion).

Also, even though they do get rowdy, they rarely vandalize property or do other such acts. Also there is very limited amounts of fighting. Clubs feel far, far safer there than here.

Noise inside bars can be migitated with engineering, people rarely complain about the noise from inside the bars/clubs, the issue is from the people going to and leaving from the bars/clubs and this is were I'd argue that the Japanese seem much better behaved then us North Americans. As Metro-One pointed out T/P/O.

^ True, but I'm talking about the plastic 'noise' covers being added even with the regulated 10pm patio closure rule. It's complete overkill.

Your pretty much asking a "chicken or the egg" question and I don't think its that complicated. If you give people "freedom" they will learn to use it responsibly without being douchebags. People are very good at policing them selves. The problem I see in NA is the amount of restrictions and lack of overall freedom (its the little things that count) and imo this results in people not knowing how to think for them selves and take responsibility for their actions when they are actually given some leeway.

It's a vicious cycle imo: take people's freedom away and they never learn to use it > give them some freedom and because they don't know how to use it they make a mess > don't give the people the time to learn to use the new freedom and create order > take the freedom away again, increase restrictions and lower confidence leaving people with even less opportunity to learn to use freedom when its given to them and taking self responsibility.

The solution is to reduce restrictions and give society time to adjust and you will eventually get order and a more responsible and less douchebagy society.
