Regarding the PAC tower, the architect of the theater told me that they when demolition and construction start for the PAC that that crew will be responsible for demolition of the space for the tower, as well as foundation work for the tower, and possibly the first floor. That will allow the tower to be built when demand requires without major disruption of the theater due to underground work. Similar to what occurred with the base of the Cascade at City Creek.

I too hope that the tower construction will commence shortly after, if not at the same time as the PAC. I would venture to guess that the tower construction will be predicated on Hamilton Partners finding a major tenant for the new building, as was the case with Goldman and 222. It's time to lure not only another regional headquarters to SLC but to lure a corporate Headquarters to downtown SLC. California is ripe for the picking and is primed to do the wooing.

Well that's good news. I can't wait for that block to be something other than vacant run-down buildings.

Would be great if not for that 'wall' on the bottom-floor level.

I agree with you, however I'm not sure how pedestrian oriented 300 W can ever be, so while I'm not a huge fan of the wall, I do like the overall design. Ideally would still like to see some street engagement though.

That will give 300 west some additional density to go along with the 247 apartments, just up the street. Those two together could ultimately result in the Granary District starting to become more active, it's only a block and a half away from the 9th S Trax platform which could potentially help 700 S develop more.

Being on 700 S it does give the transit loop, connecting from SL Central, south to 700 S and connecting to the existing line more feasibility, as either a trax or streetcar.

I'd complete the loop using light-rail and create a government-subsidized, fare-free downtown transit loop." I think this would really encourage downtown living, even more than the current fare-free zone! Although a loop or "circulator" would not add a substantial amount of new coverage, it would substantially increase mobility for those living within walking distance of it.

As for the planned development on 300 west, I also don't like the "wall." I think the design could easily be improved if the residential units above the parking structure included bay windows--providing the sidewalk below with additional "natural surveillance" or "eyes on the street."

Thanks for posting those ViperLord; I always liked going through the architecture building at the U and looking at the student projects. Cool to be able to see these online now.

Some interesting designs; hopefully we'll see some towers of a similar size sooner rather than later.

Too bad none of those cool designs will never see the light of day, at least not here in Salt Lake.

Hey all, last night I watched a pretty interesting documentary called Urbanized. It's a little more than a year old, I think, but it was pretty good. I figured anyone here on this forum would enjoy it too, so I figured I'd recommend it. It was encouraging to see that Salt Lake is actually hopping on board with some of the better trends that are beginning to show in some of the major cities on the planet. I rented the copy from the Tower theater, I don't know if it's on netflix or not, but I'm sure it can't be too hard to find.
