My understanding is that Urban Reserve businesses pay a user fee to the city that equals about what the taxes would. They can't pay tax so they created a fee to even things up. The obvious benefits are not paying corporate tax, and treaty card holders not having to pay consumption taxes on products.

Again this is all what I've heard through the grapevine, no actual research done.

Not to be too nit picky, but as far as water and sewer goes these services are charged through the utility bill (user pay system) rather than municipal taxes.

Fine and dandy but the cost to maintain water and sewer lines is not fully recouped through user fees, property tax dollars go into every city service, exempting some that use city services at the expense of others makes little sense.

^ scotty_c is correct though. The urban reserves pay a fee that is basically the same as what the property taxes would be. I'm not knowledgeable of the finer details, but of that I am certain.

Report says GDP to surge

Saskatoon is expected to have the highest economic growth in Canada this year, an Ottawa-based economic forecasting agency says.

Saskatoon's gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to grow by 3.7 per cent in 2013, according to a report released Thursday by the Conference Board of Canada.

Regina's GDP is expected to grow by 3.5 per cent, second only to Saskatoon among major Canadian cities.

Saskatoon's GDP is expected to surge from last year's 2.9 per cent growth, which placed it fifth in the country.

The Conference Board also forecasts Saskatoon to be tops for the 2014-17 forecast period and second among 28 cities surveyed for actual and estimated economic growth from 2008 to 2017.

"A thriving and successful Saskatoon economy is attracting newcomers in droves," the report says.

CBC in Saskatoon moves to new space ahead of spring launch of new digital service

Feb 15, 2013 CBC News

It is moving day for staff of CBC in Saskatoon as the broadcaster switches locations in the city in advance of new programming, set to launch in the spring.

The new location, on 4th Ave South, includes space for an integrated radio, television and online newsroom.

CBC is planning a new morning radio program and online service dedicated to telling Saskatoon stories to the community, province and world.

Work on the site began in the fall and the program launch is set for April 29.

Heather Loughran, who was recently appointed executive producer for the location, explained the new space was needed to accommodate the additional staff and equipment involved in the new service.

"CBC recognized that the city of Saskatoon was an under-served market for the network," she said in a note about the move. "This city was then chosen to launch a new digital service that is unlike other services CBC currently offers."

I noticed yesterday as I was driving down 8th Street that there are two new frozen yogurt bars going in and within close proximity to the old Dairy Queen on 8th.

- "Menchies" - On the corner of 8th and Louise (1701 8th Street East) in the new shopping complex on the old Shell gas station site.

Frozen yogurt bars are the new fad, just like the all-you-can-eat sushi places were a few years ago. Any bets on how long until it fizzles out?

That one is a Pure as well. I'd rather go to Pure though, since that's a locally owned business.

The one he is referring to is called something like I Love Yogurt or something dumb like that. haha. It doesn't look very appealing to me.

I am glad that Pure has gotten its foot in the door before the big international guys (Menchies and Tutti Frutti) set up shop in the coming weeks.

Just noticed today that the old Scratch is going to be called Congress Beer House. Looks like another new restaurant which will be a great addition to downtown and 2nd Ave. Not much other info, just the Opening Soon on the windows.

I believe there was a post on here around the time that the Four Points opened that the company that built it was also planning a second hotel under a different brand.

I would never have thought of that area as a place that needs lots of hotel rooms. However with lots of residential, some offices in the area, close to the Ex grounds it probably makes enough sense that the owners of the Four Points think they can fill a second hotel. I now they use the Ex. grounds for a big Co-op trade-show or convention each year, does it get a lot of other exhibition use during the rest of the year.
