Just wanted to point out that the city has done a great job with the outdoor skating rink this year downtown as compared to last year. Its not just a simple blue mat covered with water on the plaza, but it is actually inside the park, which gives off a nice atmosphere. People will actually go downtown just to use this specific skating rink. Which is great, considering there are 60 outdoor rinks throughout the city that are within 10-20min walking distances. This will only get better and attract more people every year.

Agreed it is a way better set up than the postage stamp from last year, but it elimintes another supposed use for the plaza. The ice is bad for the grass in the park. I would have thought the plaza was large enough to accomodate a decent ice oval on the non-travelled portion.

It has been greatly underused. Most days there is nobody using it. Although today it has been fairly busy. 8 people on it right now.

Canterbury Condo Tower

I don't really know how big that piece of property is but I'm pretty sure that's what she stated to us. As to the location of this high-rise, I agree with these being built more in the core of the city but I think this particular location was chosen as it would have fabulous views of Wascana Centre and of course that includes lake views, which would be pretty awesome!!
I was at city hall maybe five years ago when the developer was obtaining planning approval for the Anglican Archdiocese property. There were presentations made about the need to preserve the heritage value of the existing buildings and trees which has been done quite well so far I think. As far as the condo tower goes, I think the initial plan was to have it right on Broad St. But development near Wascana Centre is a touchy issue, as the integrity of the park is regarded to extend beyond its physical boundaries. So the developer was directed to relocate the tower to the eastern edge of Archdiocese property so it wouldn't loom over Wascana Centre.

The eastern edge is taken up by the construction of the huge building 2 of the retirement home. there is about a 200 foot wide lot between the two constuction sites.

I think having this tower " looming " over Wascana Centre is a positive thing not a negative. I like the way Central Park in New York looks with all the high-rises surrounding it.Maybe these overly sensitive people at Wascana Centre should take a more worldly view of things, rather than this small town way of looking at things. Also I hardly think if this tower were constructed in the location they have suggested, is not in any way "looming" over the park, just my opinion!

From the looks of the layout, and the Google Earth viewpoint, the lot where the tower is planned to be doesn't have anything, so there's still the possibility of the tower going up in Canterbury.

Happened to be driving by tonight and snapped some shots. The new retirement building is absolutely enormous.

I'm just thinking out loud, but would it be possible to have an integrated library/arts facility built on the CPR land along Dewdney? I recognize it'd be more preferable to have such a facility within the actual downtown area, however it'd be somewhat difficult to find the space for it, whereas the CPR land is open for development of that size.

At this point in time, I'd bet on "CT" going up before "CP" does. Lol!!!

"We're going to have to have a new terminal expansion up and running by 202021-22," Hunter said.

"We're looking at 2016, 2017, where we actually have to be in position to start the project."

While the last terminal expansion, which was completed in 2005, cost about $20 million, Hunter said the next expansion would entail a "super-expenditure of money."

"If we do everything that we have in this terminal reserve plan, we're going to spend in the neighbourhood of $150 million to $200 million."
The RAA board will decide later this year whether to proceed with the expansion project, he added.

There is a long-term plan to have a 10-some-odd-storey hotel on airport grounds where the terminal is. (About 100-150 feet towards the city from the Air Canada Cargo building. The AC cargo building will be removed before the next expansion is undertaken.) Of course, that is subject to change. Other hotels? Who knows. Grasslands isn't very far though.

Im hoping for a hotel or two on the CP land. Since bringing population downtown is a slow but ongoing process, we could at least bring some temporary residents via more hotels. Would love to see a boutique hotel or two go up as well.

On that note, does anyone have a rough estimate of what the potential downtown population could be after everything currently being constructed is complete? Assuming every building is full.

I'd bet that there will be an 'Open Season' on the former CP grounds once it opens up for development.
