Vancouver mulling first co-housing complex
Will cohousing be Vancouver's next big thing?

From laneway homes to tiny condos, there are all kinds of creative ideas for making Metro Vancouver real estate more affordable.
A proposed co-housing project that would use shared facilities to lower costs and promote neighbourly socialization is heading to Vancouver city council Tuesday.

The planned 31-unit complex would feature a communal dining area, kitchen, gathering space, laundry room, music room, guest suite, exercise studio, roof-top deck, indoor play area, a teenagers’ lounge and a bicycle repair room.

Unlike co-operative buildings, which are legal entities that own real estate, co-housing is a privately owned lifestyle choice. The bulk of the proposed units would be available for purchase while at least two would be designated rentals.

Here's a drawing of the building:

Looks good. 8 storeys - not bad as an entrance marker to Cambie Village.

You can see the station in the render - but if you mean access from the condo directly into the station,
the answer would be "no" as the project is too small to warrant that kind of expense.

What I meant was whether the building would be built over the station house. I couldn't tell in the render if the station is the backed out box or the portion of the building under the balcony with the people on it. I took another look and it appears to be both. So it's good news, the station won't be left orphaned on the plot of land.

It looks like it will be built atop the station. The blacked out portion is just the glass canopy. The station is underneath the building -- the windows in the render don't match reality, but the concrete structure does.

Also, from Wikipedia: "The station is designed to accommodate the future construction of a transit-connected development over the station entrance."

I noticed new info for the Cambie & 12th (Whte Spot) condo -
2806-2850 Cambie Street.

It's now really UGLY!!
Looks like something they'd allow on Main in Mt. Pleasant.

I actually like it, I think its an improvement over the old renders.

Wow, that Cambie & 12th revised design is pretty awful!

Maybe an opportune time to change architects? Not sure why these guys were hired to begin with, but they sure are making it look difficult...

NE corner at 29th (turn-off to MidLothian Way)

Not nice either.... (same architects as the White Spot project (vastly different - PoMo this time (still ugly)).

My problem with the White Spot condo is that it is far too bulky (all of the brick on the upper levels primarily frame balconies - and the faux historicism is not suited to the Cambie corridor which is not early 20th century, but baby boomer 1940s vintage.)

It would fit in down in Chinatown (or forced to be imposed on Mt. Pleasant) (but would still be "heavy" - a comment I made on one of the other midrises being built down in Chinatown with the bricked corner balconies).

funny you say that as I was thinking it would fit perfect on Union street with that clump of Brick faced condos there. I like the project but am not sure it fits in at that location as you say.

well, if you ask me, it looks the same as almost every other major condominium project in vancouver, only difference is the massing, which brings a bulk that i think is sorely needed across the city.

Welcome to Gregorville which is shaping up to be a complete misuse of the city's one true ceremonial boulevard. Banal architecture rushed through in the name of "green" density. Our only hope is the housing market continues to tank and stalls these projects until saner heads prevail.
