Wright Flyer Almost Ready to Soar Over Wright Brothers Park

Montgomery is the birthplace of civil rights and civil war, but it's also the birthplace of civil aviation.

CBS-8 News gets the first inside look at the Wright Flyer replica be constructed for Wright Brothers Park in downtown Montgomery.

Thursday the city broke ground on the new pavilion at Wright Brothers Park, previously Overlook Park on Maxwell Blvd.

The pavilion is one of two key landmarks tying in the Wright Brother's historic connection with Montgomery, the architecture of the represents the right upper wing of the 1903 Wright Flyer. Back in 1910 the Wright Brothers opened up the first U.S. aviation training school at Maxwell Air Force Base.

“As soon as you come across the last bridge towards Montgomery, you'll see it, and it's going to look like it's about to take off across the interstate” ...

We tried the one in Hapeville, GA this weekend, down by the ATL airport. It was pretty good and everyone enjoyed their food. Only drawback, this particular location was a smoking restaurant. I sure hope the one here in downtown Montgomery is non-smoking!

If I had to guess, there will be smoking allowed on top if it's exposed to air.... that's how the McGuire's Pub in Destin works.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange on Thursday announced the city’s plan to turn the rain garden that overlooks the Alabama River on Maxwell Boulevard into a public park.

The city-owned property, known informally as Boatramp Park, is at the corner of Maxwell Boulevard and Morris Street. The park fits in with the city’s plan to connect Riverfront Park, Wright Brothers Park and Powder Magazine Park.
Chad Emerson, the city’s director of development, said the “final vision” of the park will cost between $250,000 and $300,000, which includes a rental facility for canoes, decorative improvements to the banks of the boat ramp and connecting the park to the Riverfront Park...

...The park plan includes passive greenspace and a boat ramp for non-motorized boats.

...Strange also said the city is working with the Salvation Army, which is next door to the property, to either buy the property or do some kind of land swap. He said the intent would be to expand the park...

Where is Chipotle going to be located in Eastchase? I saw the location of Firebirds...on the backside of Bone Fish.

I think it is going in right next to Sprint and Tazik's It looks like the same style they use else where. And I just love their food.

Construction of the city’s largest lake will be complete by August in the Hampstead development...

Work on the the 22.5 acre lake will start late this winter...The lake will be walkable around the entire perimeter — much like the lake at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and at the museum... Hampstead homes will face the lake, but not back up to it. This will allow everyone to always have beautiful views and access ...

Lake-front lots in Hampstead’s Phase Two will be released in stages throughout the year...

We've enjoyed eating at the one in Hoover, AL. I hope it is successful. That spot (in Eastchase) has been the kiss of death for everything that has located there!

I just happened to notice last night that a Firehouse Sub shop is opening in the Festival Plaza on Zelda Road on the opposite end of the center from La Zona Rosa. I have no idea if they are keeping the other location on Atl Hwy or this will replace that one.

Finally, here are some pics of the progress going on for Montgomery's Outer Loop. This is the construction of the interchange at I-85. This highway will connect with I-65 south of the city when it's completed.
