It would bother me if the building was architecturally significant, which is not the case here. I think you're putting way too much stock into how much the average person cares about signage on a building.

Actually, I quite like it that a Company chose to put a name on top of their building. Even if it's not the most beautiful logo..it still shows to the people on the freeway "eh, this Company is headquartered here". It's way better than an empty named building, IMO.

You're absolutely correct about the sign, don't mind the negative feedback here. I've been asked the same question by friends who have passed by it lately. Its horrendous. But what can we do? Many of those buildings themselves are horrendous.

This particular thread is for positive downtown cheerleading.

I don't wanna piss on anyone's parklet parade, but I think that looks really cluttered. It doesn't even look inviting. It looks like someone is moving in or out and left their stuff on the street---or left their trash on the street. All that's missing is the sign that says "up for grabs."

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of parklets, but...

You suck at sarcasm btw.

And after seeing the parklets in person, all I have to say is 'ehh.' I love the idea of 'urban couches' but in this instance, it should be implemented better.

I agree completely to both statements. But they are much better than what was there before (parking..). Hopefully they will be improved upon in the future (lengthened, objects spread out just a bit).

What would be better? I can only think widening the sidewalk (which Spring St really could benefit from).

I couldn't care less about the sign on the building. It's such a small, inconsequential thing, and its incredibly silly to think that it has any bearing on downtown whatsoever.

Absolutely right. I don't think people spend any time wondering who Paul Hastings is. What's that old saying? 'Me thinks thou doth protest too much' or something like that.

Just got back from Downtown. Have pictures of the work on the Courtyard Marriott, Wilshire Grand, 9th and Olive, 8th and Grand, 8th and Hope, and the Chinatown gateway. They'll be up in about an hour.

I'm loving the frequency of photo updates lately. Well done everyone.

Mojeda's February 11th, 2013 Downtown tour

Hello everyone! I have just returned from my trip to Downtown Los Angeles. To start things off, I was in awe to see how packed the streets were this afternoon. So many people walking our streets. People claim LA has a ton of parking, but the reality is, I took me a while to find a good meter in the heart of the city, they were all taken! But i'm not here to give you guys my judgement on our city, I have what you all have been waiting for. Updates on all the major projects going on in Downtown. One project I failed to get any pictures of was the Broad parcel tower. Sorry guys, maybe next time! But in the meantime, enjoy the updates on the following! Ciao!

8th and Hope

While I was up on the Macy's parking structure, I noticed continuous amounts of trucks hauling dirt away, I looked to my left and of course, it was 8th and Grand. This is what I saw

Those trucks just kept going back and fourth! At this rate the whole lot will be empty in no time!

8th and Grand

9th and Olive

Courtyard Marriott

Wilshire Grand

Jia Apartments

I wasn't really a fan of this project but it definitely made Chinatown MUCH more approachable! It makes the gateway seem filled. I hope this spreads all over Chinatown!

Misc

Bless you Mojeda. With all the negativity and complaining on here lately, its nice to see a focus on the improvements. Some other posters should take note.

Oh...and not cheerleading...just not whining like some valley hipster with a self glory complex.

Mojeda,

As usual thanks very much for the excellent photos.

The Marriott seems to be moving at a great pace.

Really appreciate the time and the effort you take.

The OBD still doesn't have the largest population possible, esp that's 24/7, which limits the number of potential customers who might support the shops that already are in the hood. that's why I hope the apt tower that barry shy wants to build about one block to the east will be started asap. I know he owns the bldg that the coffee bar is in, & so he'd be helping his own retail tenants by expanding the pool of residents....& prospective new shoppers...in the immediate area.

I'm guessing they had only so much $$ to spend on the renovation & ran out of funds before they were able to do some additional work on the front....inc the outdoor eating area, which looks like a few tables & chairs are tossed out each day onto the sidewalk at the last minute...& adding a sign.

I hate to think of how hard it must be to juggle all their expenses right now, where they face the problem of either too few or too many customers....depending on the time of day & whether a special event is taking place. too much feast or famine.

Other than the eastern columbia & orpheum bldgs to the south & the bldgs at the corner of 5th & broadway to the north, the street could use alot more nice housing....there definitely is a need for more apts between the 2 major points I've mentioned. More ppl living around Figaro would help smooth out the extremes of unpredictable crowd patterns.

that's quite bad....they could have at least centered the signs horizontally at the top of the bldg.

I remember the CRA, when it still had lots of influence in the hood, instituted a strict sign ordinance. But even well before they had shut down, their enforcement of signs on bldgs seemed to grow lax. I think the difficulty in filling up office space...now going back over 15 yrs....made everyone pull back & become less idealistic. Generally, when times are tough, ppl begin to compromise....may even become desperate....& standards drop.

Wonderful! thanks to you & all the others who keep us up to date on the ongoing changes to dt....both pictorially & with descriptions about direct visits.

It will be exciting watching all the projs now underway come closer & closer to completion.

One new thing I see in one of your pics is that a large "for sale" sign has been unfurled on the bldg at the SE corner of 8th & olive. I'm puzzled by that cuz I thought the owners said recently they had been getting lots of interest from potential buyers.....I wonder if they're now trying to milk things, by trying to get more looky loos & causing some frenzy in the process.

right now, I can't think of any other proj that has been publicized & may break ground in the next several months. Only possible major news that might come out in the next few months....& has already been rumored about....concerns the stadium next to LA live.
