The OBD still doesn't have the largest population possible, esp that's 24/7, which limits the number of potential customers who might support the shops that already are in the hood. that's why I hope the apt tower that barry shy wants to build about one block to the east will be started asap. I know he owns the bldg that the coffee bar is in, & so he'd be helping his own retail tenants by expanding the pool of residents....& prospective new shoppers...in the immediate area.

I'm guessing they had only so much $$ to spend on the renovation & ran out of funds before they were able to do some additional work on the front....inc the outdoor eating area, which looks like a few tables & chairs are tossed out each day onto the sidewalk at the last minute...& adding a sign.
I hate to think of how hard it must be to juggle all their expenses right now, where they face the problem of either too few or too many customers....depending on the time of day & whether a special event is taking place. too much feast or famine.
Other than the eastern columbia & orpheum bldgs to the south & the bldgs at the corner of 5th & broadway to the north, the street could use alot more nice housing....there definitely is a need for more apts between the 2 major points I've mentioned. More ppl living around Figaro would help smooth out the extremes of unpredictable crowd patterns.

that's quite bad....they could have at least centered the signs horizontally at the top of the bldg.
I remember the CRA, when it still had lots of influence in the hood, instituted a strict sign ordinance. But even well before they had shut down, their enforcement of signs on bldgs seemed to grow lax. I think the difficulty in filling up office space...now going back over 15 yrs....made everyone pull back & become less idealistic. Generally, when times are tough, ppl begin to compromise....may even become desperate....& standards drop.
