Draft beer prices in Hamilton don't make a lot of sense, apart from the few places on Barton and the like that compete on price.

Those are pretty high pint prices. I would say Toronto level but I went out to the Yonge/Dundas Jack Astor's after work one day and paid $21 for two pints so even Toronto has gone up.

I am still excited to try Anchor Bar though.

LCBO has a "floor price" set for alcohol. A 341 bottle must be minimum $2, and scales up from there. A 20-oz glass in a bar must be $3.33 minimum.

The Winking Judge and many craft beer bars in TO have $5 pint nights, usually on a Monday. Jack Astor's can stick it....

yeah, these days we've come to expect that a restaurant has let's say a minimum of 8-10 beers on tap with at least 2-3 being micros. this isn't the 90s anymore

Anchor Bar isn't "the Anchor Bar" until they at least carry Genny aka Genesee Beer (in this case Genny Cream Ale), the Rochester, NY brew. wings+Genny=that's a true Western NY experience.

glad to hear your reviews. hopefully they work out the kinks, get a better beer selection and reduce the freakin' prices!

Wow... just finished comparing those two menus, and that is pretty ridiculous. Almost makes me not want to even try it.

Yes, that price would be expected for something that's scarce or "premium". I'm hoping that The Ship and Winking Judge are not colluding with the other bars. They are my "locals".

Just a heads up there is a new resturant bar opening up where Ronnie G's use dto be called Shenenigans! I know one of the guys involved in the venture and it should be pretty good, you can follow them on Twitter @sheneiganbar and on facebook at Shenenigans Bar!

I know they are planning on opening mid march and from what I have seen of some photos its going to be nice!

354 Main West is newly occupied by Alirang, which presumably is a Korean restaurant. Not sure if they're open (or, if so, when).

I noticed the Korean restaurant (although I assumed it was Japanese) a couple of days ago on my walk to work. Nice to see that spot opening again although it looks to be a tough one with no parking there.

Local winemaker to open Dundas craft brewery

When Ed Madronich said beer was the next logical step for him, he wasn't recounting the previous night's adventures. As the owner of Flat Rock Cellars winery in Jordan, Madronich was referring to beer on a bit larger scale: a craft brewery he's planning for downtown Dundas.

The plan is still in its infancy. Madronich has located a building at 64 and 65 Hatt St. — the former location of Valley City Manufacturing — but is waiting to see if the city will approve a rezoning bid that would allow him to transform the space into a brewery where visitors could tour the facilities as well as sample and purchase the beer.

Regardless, Madronich says he is set on opening the brewery and Dundas is his locale of choice.

"It would be disappointing if the application wasn't approved, but if we have to we'll find a new location," he said.

"I would hope everything goes smoothly, and fingers crossed, we'll be open by the end of this year."

I took a walk around that building a week ago. I think it would be perfect for a craft brewery. I'm really excited about this.

I thought the craft brewery had an option to purchase the former curling rink across from Valley City which they used as a warehouse (not the main buildings that back onto Spencer's Creek)?

So a close friend of mine who I drink with dropped in to sample the wares and see what all the hoopla was about.
He stated: "Rolling Rock $8.50, Coors Light $7.75 a pint. 1st and last time for me."
I tried the Cottage Life pub when it opened. It was more than normal and the so called pints were served in 16 oz glasses. Where did that get them and where are they now.
This place may be a destination place but like Hunny's Hamilton will not (pardon the pun) buy into it. Maybe now that there are more hotels and we may see more convention or business travelers.
I will go and try it out just to say I was there before it closed.
I was at a place the other night with a band and one bartender for 50 people and she did quite well all things considered. Less staff, less wages less overhead reasonable prices. Squires is like $6 an imp pint and that is considered steep. For domestic.
For a 32 oz mini jug you pay $8.
Just a suggestion, but it is a bar in downtown Hamilton (Jackson Square) not the waterfront in Toronto.

This is a brilliant idea. Long overdue and should be many more to follow. It has already been discussed for Jackson Square.
Places like Garrison in Halifax is close to the Universities and sell growlers in 2 unit sling bags for an evening out.
Checkout their little reception area at Pier 21. I would support a local establishment especially after the corporate take over of Lakeport.
This is a growing industry and any successful enterprise is gobbled up.
For example Goose Island of Chicago was bought up by Busch.
I wish them all the best and will sample the stock.

Good on you for stepping into this forum and inviting our input. But I have to say I'm a bit confused. You say you will be "serving up great food", and then ask for menu ideas.

So what is the great food? Or rather, what is the theme of your bar and grill? Sports bar? Pub? Upmarket dining/nite life?

I'm sure many people, including me, would toss some ideas at you. But I need more details on the identity/brand plan of Shenanigans.

If you say you're planning 1 lb of wings and beer pitcher combos, I won't be giving you any ideas!

That building on Hatt St is considered one of the oldest industrial buildings in Ontario - a real beauty. Hatt street itself is a gem which is largely overlooked. It's lined by old industrial buildings and beautiful Victorian townhouses and cottages. Anyway, this project sounds great and will help to draw more people to the area.
