Today City Council Approved $2.5 million for bicycle projects in 2013.

Major projects funded:
  • James P Brawley "bike boulevard" (1st in city) connecting Atlanta University Center to neighborhoods with mini traffic circles and other improvements
  • 2-way cycle track on Peachtree Center Ave between Edgewood and Peachtree, to allow cyclists to bypass the streetcar tracks coming to that section of Peachtree Street and better connect to east/west bicycle routes
  • A road diet adding bike lanes on Decatur Street, from Jesse Hill to Jackson, connecting GSU to the King Center MARTA station
  • Murphy Ave bike lanes, creating better connectivity for residents of Southwest Atlanta and neighboring cities East Point and College Park
  • 10th St cycle track on bridge to create a safer crossing
  • 10th Street cycle track from Piedmont to Monroe, connecting with the BeltLine Eastside Trail
  • Charles Allen/Parkway cycle track or bike lanes
  • Krog Street & tunnel add sharrows and lighting, improve pavement in tunnel
  • Peachtree St install sharrows on most of Peachtree, bike lanes on wide section over the interstate, connecting with Peachtree Ave cycle track to Edgewood
  • 2-way cycle track from Peters St to Mitchell St bridge, connecting Mitchell Street bike lanes with Castleberry Hill neighborhood
  • West Peachtree upgrade bike lane to standard width
  • 5th Street upgrade bike lane and improve pavement
  • McLendon add bike lanes from Arizona to Howard
  • Edgewood Ave upgrade bike lanes and intersection improvements (eg bike boxes)

Wow! This is major news coming from the City, shivtim. Someone at City Hall has a clue, and this is transformative thinking. Very impressive, and gives me hope that we are indeed turning the corner in several ways. These are exciting times for Atlanta.

[QUOTE=nature's calling;6001217]Fuqua's design of the Glenwood project has been rejected, again.

I wished someone would have told this to Novare, but instead of shopping center, condo/apartment building. Good for this NPU.
"The cookie-cutter, suburban-style shopping center with urban window dressing is simply not appropriate for this site," the NPU says.

what's wrong with novare's plan? 100 6th street was redesigned with street level retail on all sides and a dog park.

The massive above ground, unhidden, parking deck.

Bike lanes are designed by people who don't bike, and are a usually complete waste of money! They usually just redraw the lanes so that bicycles have an extra foot or so on the shoulder. If it's a busy street, it's still makes for very dangerous and unpleasant biking.

Not sure what sharrows and cycle tracks are.

^but the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition had heavy influence. In most cases they aren't just redrawing lanes, they will be removing either a parking lane or a travel lane, or expanding the bikeway/sidewalk onto adjacent land. I think Atlanta is finally getting it right... just listen to the description of the new Ponce bikelanes:
"A buffered bike lane (a bike lane with added breathing room between bicyclists and motor vehicles) will complement safety enhancements for pedestrians, transit riders, and drivers. Other improvements include resurfacing, lane reconfigurations, ADA accessibility improvements, and improved access to public transportation as well as the Atlanta BeltLine."

A "cycle track" is a separated bike lane on the roadway, so there is some sort of barrier (a curb, a planting median, etc) between the cars and the bikes, to improve safety. Just check out a google image search to see what they could look like.

I hope so! The beltline is looking awesome so far, but the bike lanes they're putting on Peacthree in Buckhead are completely worthless. No buffer whatsoever.

I'm curious, has anyone seen the building elevations/blueprints for Skyhouse? I'm trying to find it for Austin's Skyhouse, and I know our's is going to be the same as the one in Atlanta. I haven't been able to find it yet, even though I'm checking the development review files on the City of Austin's website.

Not only is there no buffer, but about every 20 feet or so there is a storm drain taking up half of the bike lane. Very deadly to ride over for bikes. I'm sad they did all this work on Peachtree and it still sucks and dangerous to bike.

Would anyone here be able to decipher what "enhanced pedestrian crossings" are as they apply to the Myrtle and Argonne crossings of 10th? I've always thought those crossings were very dangerous and I'm happy something is being done, I'm just not quite sure what.

Hallelujah.

A poorly crafted "construction moratorium" was incorrectly applied to this parcel and East Atlanta Village, and had threatened to derail this project. The "construction moratorium" (two words that make me shudder) expired at the end of last year and we are lucky the developer hung around long enough to keep the project alive. EAV is badly in need of this residential infusion and perhaps it will jump start some other sorely needed redevelopment throughout East Atlanta.

Lenox Square facade renovation now underway

As construction begins on a new façade for Lenox Square, The Cheesecake Factory is in discussions to take one of redesigned spaces at the front of the Buckhead mall.

The Cheesecake Factory Inc. (Nasdaq: CAKE) is eyeing a portion of the former Crate & Barrel space near the Peachtree Road entrance, according to industry insiders. The Crate & Barrel space is being divided for two tenants, a restaurant and a two-story retailer. The restaurant would have a patio and would sit near Macy’s.

The Cheesecake Factory might relocate its Buckhead restaurant (now at 3024 Peachtree Road) to the space.Or, it’s considering opening one of its other restaurants there — a concept called Grand Lux Café. The Venetian-style restaurant has 14 locations around the country, but none in Georgia.

Krog Street Market:

"In early November, Cochran started work on two key projects along the Atlanta Beltline's booming Eastside Trail in Inman Park. Both could help spur intown Atlanta's renaissance and add an additional jolt to an already vibrant and bustling corner of town.

First up is transforming the inside of Tyler Perry's massive former Krog Street studio into Krog Street Market, a 12,000-square-foot foodie's paradise similar to San Francisco's Ferry Building Marketplace. Local chefs, bakers, florists, and cheese makers would sell their wares inside the adapted sawtooth-brick building under 20-foot ceilings and clerestory windows. Restaurant patios would line the street and allow diners to gaze upon people jogging and biking along the Beltline.

In the parking lot of the nearby Stove Works development, which Paces also purchased in late October, approximately 200 apartments would rise and stretch all the way to Edgewood Avenue, helping create the dense communities along the Beltline depicted in countless project renderings. "

Kind of old news, but I didn't realize the placing of the apartments before this article.

I'm not sure for these particular crossings, but I'm guessing it will be rapid flash beacons. These have been used elsewhere in the metro, and that's what they're installing on 10th at the Midtown MARTA station.

I ate at a Grand Lux in Vegas and it was amazingly good, cannot believe they don't have multiple locations in ATL.

Thanks! Full red would be nice but this definitely looks like it would be an improvement.
