Something about the alberta arenas. Saddle dome is notorious for being quiet too.

They can sell out a game and it still sounds like a library in there

Ha weird. Vancouver and Toronto get criticized for their arenas being too quiet due to all the suits in the stands.

The saddledome is definitely not one of the loudest. Part of that is the design though, the acoustics are absolutely awful in there. Concerts suck in the saddledome. But a good portion of the fans are stuffed shirt season ticket holders and suits showing off their Rolexes.

All the rowdies are tucked up in the nose bleeds. Rexall seems louder to me, on tv anyway. On TV the saddledome always sounds like someone has their hand over the mic, no other area sounds the same. To me anyway.

Just back from the game...

Loo looked amazing, Dub equally if not more so, but good god we cannot be clutch. Hall has zero hands.

Beer was also out at my concession. Brutal.

From personal experience at both:

Rexall is a VERY loud building. The acoustics there just bounce the sound around everywhere. It's actually annoying, because it's almost impossible to have a conversation without yelling. However it's gotten a bit quieter in recent years due to the team ... well, sucking. Expect it to pick up as the Oil turns into a winning team again.

The Saddledome mics have always been terrible for picking up crowd noise. Part of it is that 1/4 or more of the crowd is up in the rafters, and due to the unique shape of the building, all of that sound doesn't go anywhere. But even during loud playoff games, when the place is rockin' - you just don't hear it on TV. However, the biggest reason the 'dome has gotten a reputation for silence - 10 years of Sutter hockey. People were fucking BORED out of their skulls. It's been much, much, MUCH louder this season (and the team ain't even winning). It actually has caught me off guard because I'm just not used to it. And this past Saturday, when the Flames got 24 shots in a period that was described by many in the media as "the most exciting and dominating period in the NHL in years" - I watched it on TV for a change, and it really was quiet. No way a Saturday crowd was that quiet, especially not this year. You're right, it's like the mics are muffled. Saturday is drunken rig worker night, it's never quiet.

Not even being a homer, but generally speaking this has to be the worst officiated season I have ever watched. It's only a couple weeks in and there are countless examples of terrible calls screwing over multiple teams.

Yes, officiating has been frustratingly inconsistent so far. Especially when it comes to the random goal decisions by the refs.

I have seen a lot of goals that should have counted, but were either blown dead because the ref had no idea what was going on, or they called a phantom "interference" penalty. More so than usual.

I wonder if it's because they didn't get a preseason to sort that stuff out?

Yup. I can be as much of a homer as anyone, but this season I've been yelling about calls that were in FAVOUR of teams I'm cheering for.

Hell, I'm even making comments like "Toronto was robbed". I mean come on, this is me.

It's a combination of the fans and the building.

The Fans......
The fans in Calgary often times are not the rowdiest of fans to begin with. The worst time for this was back in the 80's when more people wore suits and fur coats than red jerseys, and there was no such thing as kids at a game.
In the late 90's and up until they went on their cup run, the fans that were there were real hockey fans.....After the cup run, we were back to tickets being hard to get and back to the business crowd.

Then there's the building....
If you go into the dome when nobody is in there, you'll find that there is no echo. Even before the game when the dome is 3/4 full you can talk to the person beside as if you were in a living room. Most buildings have a constant din of light echo even when they are almost empty. I've been in Rexall, the old Pacific Coliseum and Scotiabank place in Ottawa, and there is an echo when the building is empty. The most notable for this was the old Winnipeg Arena.
The Dome's roof shape along with insulation pads that absorb sound combine for a weird crowd noise....it's exactly like people have said........ a mic that's covered with cloth or something.

You can see the insulation pads on the roof in this shot...they're quite thick and fluffy....the sound hits those and not much bounces back.

The Flames are more exciting this year. Even though they haven't been winning it's been more enjoyable to watch.....watching goals scored where players passed it back and forth and then tapped it in is something I had forgotten about.
