Good News For Canada in the world of Skyscraper Construction

Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat

Canada
Canada has become a hot spot for tall building development. Four buildings taller than 200 meters were completed in Canada in 2012, including the 277-meter Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto. The list of notable completions also included The Bow, a 237-meter tower in Calgary with a unique diagrid structural system.

But the epicenter of Canadian tall building development is Toronto, where 15 buildings taller than 150 meters are under construction, more than any other city in the western hemisphere. All five of the towers taller than 200 meters under construction are residential, as the city looks to create new urban centers. By 2015, Toronto will likely have 44 buildings taller than 150 meters, up from 13 in 2005.

However, Toronto is not alone. Vancouver and Calgary are also growing taller. By the end of 2015 the number of buildings in Canada taller than 150 meters is expected to grow to 73, almost triple the 26 in the country in 1995.

Excellent

Yes, 3 of our 5 largest cities have been transformed by this boom, number 4(Montreal) will be joining that club this year Ottawa could potentially join as well if Claridge Icon(128 meters) and LeBreton Mews (133 and 125 meters) get built. All three Ottawa towers I mentioned would be the new tallest in the entire National Capital Region. Could even include number 6(Edmonton) if its pace of construction picks up and if they build Manulife 2. I'm very hopeful Yayyy

According to some of the Winnipeg forumers, our seventh largest metro could also be getting some transformative towers, in fact, they already built one(their 4th tallest) in 2009 and are now building another major (by Winnipeg standards) tower!

Hamilton is also on the edge of possibly getting a new tallest and 3 other towers slated at 30 stories or more, and isn't Quebec city building a ton too?

No one has mentioned anything about any of Hamilton's proposals being the new tallest.

And yeah Quebec City should be added to the list too Number 8, and now I suppose Hamilton Number 9.

Wow that's pretty crazy. By 2020 all of our ten largest metropolitan areas (except Waterloo Region(#10)) will look totally different than in 2005

Even little Halifax is joining in on the building boom! We're set to get a new tallest (Kings Wharf) around 2015, and construction will begin sometime this year. Not to mention there's something like 25 cranes currently up in the city, and a good number of those are in the core.

Don't forget Niagara Falls too. Whilst obviously it is not a big metro, there are some comparatively big proposals on the cards there.

Waterloo will be transformed by its new LRT line. It will be the smallest city in North America to have an urban rail line when it opens in 2017. It will be transformed, but not by skyscrapers!

Not necessarily skyscrapers, but Laurier is being surrounded on all sides by 10-15 story buildings. There's been about 5 new high-rises built on a 1 km strip of King st. in the past 2 years.

Yeah I was thinking Halifax too but I was just talking about the 9 largest because all of them are going mental! and then between number 10 and Halifax there's a couple metros that aren't doing anything exciting (London, St. Catharines). And yes, while Niagara Falls may have some proposals, I question whether they will be built as they are pretty grand and... not sure how things are goin there. Hope they do though.

Basically every city in the country is being transformed except Ontario's smaller, regional metros like London, St. Catharines, Windsor, Sudbury, Waterloo Region, Kingston, etc.

Even Thunder Bay is being transformed! Pretty excited to go back there in a few years to see how amazing the waterfront redevelopment turned out. It's already looking amazing. The condos, hotel, and retail will add a lot to the Port Arthur downtown (which is already the nicer of the two pre-amalgamation downtowns).

Edmonton technically has a new tallest: Epcor Tower that finished a couple years ago. Manulife II is still in the talks.

It is only tallest by spire height. Manulife Centre is still the tallest by roof height.

and yes Dwils I remember the Carmen Hotel proposal, but no one ever said anything about it becoming Hamilton's new tallest. Not that I read at least. If they build it using quality materials, that will be quite a nice new tallest for Ontario's 3rd largest CMA

Well it isn't 100% certain that it will be a new tallest, the proposed height is the same number of floors as the current tallest, but it's claiming to be luxury so that should mean higher ceilings, but who knows if it will keep its proposed floor count.

They are saying it'll be 44 storey, which will make it the new tallest in Hamilton.

http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=385

Landmark Place is the current tallest, 43 storey.

More information will be revealed on Feb 6, next Wednesday! It'll be the official announcement, Hard Rock will be part of the project.

Wikipedia says it's 44 with the observation deck.

Well, here in Laval there are a lot of condos going up, including the ViVa Condos, which will hopefully add a little density to the skyline. Also, some cranes are up near the Montmerency metro station and near Centropolis.

http://www.montrealgazette.com/busin...720/story.html

MTL:
"Despite a clear lack of leadership from the mayor’s office, things are moving in Montréal and it’s exciting to be a part of it. Currently, the skyline of Montréal is obtruded by more than 75 construction cranes, the most since the 1976 Olympic Games, stemming from 188 major construction projects that are under way. Those projects bring investments of $16.2 billion in the heart of downtown Montréal, an area that will be revitalized over the next few years."

Things are improving drastically for Canada. It's amazing to witness all the changes. Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary have all witnessed dramatic changes over the past 10 years and it looks to continue to grow over the next 10 with Montreal jumping on board. It will be very interesting and exciting to see each city's skyline by 2023 and compare it to now.
