Demolition permit issued for Forum Theater

The owner of the Forum Theater has obtained a permit to demolish the Market Street property, according to records from the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections.

Theater owner Richard Basciano could not be reached for comment immediately but he has said that he wants to knock the property down as soon as possible as part of a plan to develop the 2100 and 2200 blocks of Market Street, where he owns multiple parcels.

The Forum, believed to be Center City’s last porn theater, for decades inhibited development in the area because other businesses did not want to locate near it.

After the demolition, the Forum will be a parking lot. Many obstacles stand in the way of developing the entire area, including the unwillingness of some property owners in those two blocks to sell what they own so that it can be developed.

The demolition permit was issued Jan. 24.

The next phase in the Cira Centre development, Cira Centre South is now underway. Site prep has begun for a student residential tower at 30th and Chestnut streets.

According to the building permit issued to the developers, the residential tower will rise 36 floors, with 35 floors designated for apartment space and the first floor set aside for retail.

The University of Pennsylvania has already agreed to lease space for the tower on Walnut, which is rumored to begin construction later this year.

Brandywine currently has plans for a 25-story residential building at 20th and Market streets and a 22- to 27-story office tower at the corner of 19th and Arch streets.

Is this accurate? I thought Liberty Property Trust was the one putting up an office building in this area.

Outstanding! University City is going to have quite a nice little skyline in a couple years!

Where were the interiors shot for this? The view through some of the hospital windows in the opening segment seem like i can see the peco bldg from the south near the river

Say what?!

The search is on for engineers and designers to figure out how to redevelop Penn's Landing and connect it to the city – largely with an eight-acre park that would fully cover I-95 and Columbus Boulevard between Walnut and Chestnut streets, as well as slope down to the water.

Hmm... the tower proposed for the lot at 19th and Arch is LPT, not Brandywine.

Great news! But there is still a porn theater in CC on 13th between Walnut and Locust. It's a gay one beside Doggie Style. It looks classy from the outside though. So it doesn't draw attention to itself.

Has anyone ever seen this rendering? It has FOUR Cira-style towers in it -- the existing, the residential, the Walnut tower and what appears to be another tower on Market Street. Anyone know anything about this? If this was covered somewhere earlier or in the previous Philly thread, I could have missed it so my apologies if I did.

Ah yes, the elusive Cira III, as legendary as Loch Ness, known only from a few renderings and models that have surfaced over the years. Someone took a photo years back of a scale model in the original Cira's lobby or whereabouts. The new renders look awesome though, thanks for sharing!

That is actually Cira II... not III. Brandywine Plans the complex to eventually consist of Cira Center, Cira South, and Cira II. Cira II will sit at the corner of 30th and JFK Blvd (the hole looking down into the rail yards at the corner).

Would love to see this area tree lined like it is in those renders. As it is now though the sidewalks are very narrow on both sides in front of the IRS building and just to the south. Maybe one day we can get that small part of the railways capped too!
