well Thats a huge disappointment of a "Major Announcement" it sounds like this so-called "big annoucement" is nothing more then one owner selling the team to another owner. The sltrib is now reporting that checkets has sold the team to Dell Hansen. Boring. Hope there's more to come then JUST THAT.

I agree.

I was hoping that the announcement was going to be that they realized the Rio Tinto Stadium is in an absolutely HORRIBLE location and that they have decided to pick up the stadium and move it downtown.

I am glad that the Hansen is the owner though, that he is based in Utah and will keep the team here. With a developer being the owner, maybe the surrounding area will start to develop in a more timely fashion.

Cottonwood Mall plans are alive, barely, as nearby stores languish

Retail » Holladay officials, developer insist there’s movement on long-delayed multi-use project.

By Vince Horiuchi
| The Salt Lake Tribune - First Published 6 hours ago • Updated 1 minute ago

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/55686543-79/mall-cottonwood-store-holladay.html.csp

...With foot traffic down in their stores and frustration building by the day, merchants big and small in shops that surround the long-stalled project have been waiting for any sign of movement. As another new year dawns, there’s still nothing concrete just yet, but Holladay city officials say they’re heartened by recent signals from the developer that things are finally moving forward, if only slowly...

...Amid all the disappointment, Holladay City Manager Randy Fitts is hopeful that another five years won’t go by before merchants, residents and others see progress made on the $550 million project, whose mixed-use features of retail shops, office space and condos would make it similar to The Gateway or the City Creek development in downtown Salt Lake City. The proposal calls for 617,000 square feet of stores, 226,000 square feet of office space and 614 residential units.

"The plan is still set in place," he said. "But the economy is still not solid enough," although things appear to no longer be stuck in place...

...A few months ago, Holladay city officials met with executives of Howard Hughes Corp., the Dallas-based retail and community development company that now owns the property and holds the key to its future. "We’re very encouraged with the things they are doing," Fitts said. "Plans are not sitting on the shelf. They are working on them.

"They are looking at an entertainment component with the movie theaters to anchor things — we don’t know who they are. But reports are that they are making progress on that. There have been conversations with some builders for the residential component."

A spokeswoman for Hughes contacted last week insisted that the project was moving forward, but she offered no details.

"We are actively working on the development," said the spokeswoman, who did not want to be identified. "We’re still very positive about it, but there is not a concrete timetable yet."...

Unfortunately, this has been put completely on ice. The Kennecott mine was originally supposed to be shut down in 2012 for good. Hence their desire to keep "mining" the land through real estate development. But then Rio Tinto developed some new smelting technique or something to get still get copper out of the mine, although the percentage of copper in the remaining mine is a tiny percentage of what it was previously. Also, they have the nearby gold mine.

If you look at the West Bench plan you posted, it shows housing on top of the Tailings Pond, since the mine operations have been expanded, they're not going to build houses on top of it any time soon.

So as the X Games are on right now, it has wondering if they will move them after 2014 when their contract is up. Do you think there is any chance they will move them to Park City or Snow Basin, or even somewhere else? Watching on TV, although it is hard to see, it doesn't look like there is very many people there. If they move to Utah there is closer population base and easier access from the airport. I know there was a lot of people who went to Dew tour before they decided to leave Salt Lake.

Mill Hollow neighborhood battles developer, city in court

By cathy mckitrick | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/55695601-78/cottonwood-omana-project-neighborhood.html.csp

Mill Hollow residents who oppose the construction of two high-rise office buildings and a parking structure near their homes will finally get their day in court.

The 9-acre project, which represents the final phase of the 44-acre Cottonwood Corporate Center development near Interstate 215, advanced with a 4-3 vote from the Cottonwood Heights planning commission last June. The land in question, between 2700 and 2800 E. Cottonwood Parkway, borders a residential neighborhood.

As nice as it would be to get the Winter X Games, after looking at that list I would think that Tahoe would be the front runner. I also think not having the games here would be for the best. I just feel that the IOC would see the Winter X Games being "Beneath" them, and that would hurt SLC's chance of winning the Olympic bid for 2026. Who knows, this is just how I feel about it.

Notice the other day just south of the Hyatt place/home whatever it's called in Sandy there's ground broken right next to the Sandy Park Center. Not sure what's going in other then maybe another office building. Couldn't find anything online about it so I'm not 100% sure.

I didn't even know that project was back under construction. Last I knew it was still in forclosure, vacant and rusting/rotting away. The web link you gave though has a 2013 copyright so assume its been purchased and is being finished. Can anyone confirm?

Look at page 4 of this PDF. As of May 2012, they were finishing that structure. In phase 2, they plan to demolish the other foundation and build 3 other structures on the east side of the property.

The construction that I have noticed, and I think the one that SLC Projects (correct me if I'm wrong) is refering to is one that you can see form I-15. It's on the street that runs parrallel with I-15 to the east, looking on Google maps it is called Monroe street. The construction is next to a couple office buildings there, I think it is the Strayer University/Humana building. I have been curious as to what the development is but there aren't any signs out.

Thanks for the link Stenar, I'm glad to see this project back on track again.

As for the project it is referring too, it is the one by the Trax entrance, across from Jordan High.

Petzl

Here is a rendered image of the new Petzl building to be built in the Decker Lake Business Park in West Valley City. IMO, cool looking building!

I like it, it will give some visual variety to what is just a typical office park.
