Heard a rumor today that the same developer who built Discovery Plaza (I think North Prairie?) has or is close to buying the properties that the credit union and the blue government building sit on.

Anybody else hear that? I'm guessing there is an idea that BHP may want to expand right there.

According to their ad in today's paper (page D4), KPMG will be moving into River Centre I this coming Monday.

There is a conceptual drawing of the new Willowgrove/Holy Family Schools complex in the Saskatoon Public School Division's downtown office lobby (from what I saw it looks like just the public school side of the building). It is very reminiscent of Centennial Collegiate... it's a fairly plain two-storey structure with brick, aluminum siding, and what looks like that dark grey fake-river-rock-type siding as well.

The City of Saskatoon is looking to expand its downtown core north, filling a 240-acre gap known as the central industrial area.

240 acres is alot of land right next to the downtown core, especially that it is next to the warehouse district and the new police station is supposed to mimic the old Chicago style, makes you wonder what kind of architecture they would allow here.

Assuming they actually take the bull by the horns. This is a great opportunity for the city, very similar to the situation in Regina. I can only cross my fingers the city of Saskatoon doesn't settle for anything but the best.

Bridge needs $13.8 million in repairs

Work would close lanes 'for sure'

The nearly 100-year-old University Bridge needs a $13.8-million facelift.

"There is no risk of it collapsing, but what we are trying to do is get in there while it's most cost-effective," said Dan Willems, the city's bridge preservation manager. "Obviously the longer you leave something the more expensive it gets to fix."

On Monday, city council will be asked to approve $1.2 million in spending for the initial engineering work that will outline a major rehabilitation of the city's signature bridge. The result of the engineering study will likely be a detailed list of expensive fixes - initially estimated at nearly $14 million - that are designed to extend the bridge's lifespan.

"We are fully cognizant that this is a huge undertaking. We are trying to take a 100-year-old structure and trying to give it another 50 years of life," Willems said.

Willems said the city has known for years that the bridge's asphalt deck, which is visibly heaving in some spots, needs serious repair. But the bigger undertaking, Willems said, will be the restoration of the bridge's concrete piers and arches, which have never undergone major renovation since the bridge opened in 1916.

"The structure itself is at 100 years and it's at the point where we need to invest some money," Willems said.

Chatters continues expanding brand

Who knew deciding to offer refills on hair products would one day result in the largest hair franchise in the country.

Marlene Neil was operating her very first hair salon in the 1980s, a Hair Affair located in the 8th Street Coop, and had decided to open up another spot on Idylwyld Drive.

"It was not working for hair (on Idylwyld). I took on too much space and had to come up with something," Neil said.

"I read about (refilling hair products) in a magazine and thought I would try it.

"That one went over so well with the refilling that we opened up another one and another one. Then we expanded to Regina."

They soon developed a strategy and format to expand across the country.

"That is how our whole Chatters concept started," Neil said.

Now there are 110 stores across the country under the Chatter's umbrella. Some are corporately owned and others are franchises.

The stores offer a huge selection of professional grade retail products and salon services all under one roof.

Chatters will celebrate its newest store in Saskatoon, at Preston Crossing, with a grand opening on Saturday.

"This is our new decor and how the new stores will be looking," Neil said, adding the signage is different as are the colours.

I enjoy how the 'Neighbourhood' tab doesn't have a single Aboriginal person featured in one of the most heavily Aboriginal neighbourhoods in the country. I am looking forward to that going up, though.

University of Sask. looks at building a hotel in College Quarter

Hotel would help with out-of-town researchers, sports teams and students' parents

The University of Saskatchewan is looking to have a hotel built on its land in the College Quarter.

The 145-acre College Quarter area is bordered by College Drive, Preston Avenue, Cumberland Avenue and 14th Street. The hotel would sit on a two-acre part of land east of the parkade where beach volleyball courts are currently located.

"The hotel is an important part of the College Quarter vision where we are trying to provide services to the students and to the campus. We currently don't have a hotel on our campus," said Judy Yungwirth, director of corporate administration with the University of Saskatchewan.

The university would not run the hotel, but instead have a long-term land lease agreement with the hotel company.

HARPER GOVERNMENT TO MAKE JOINT INFRASTRUCTURE ANNOUNCEMENT

On behalf of Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty, the Minister of Agriculture and Regional Minister for Saskatchewan Gerry Ritz, and the Mayor of Saskatoon Donald Atchison, will announce a joint infrastructure project on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

The announcement will take place at the Saskatoon Transit (Maintenance Shop), 315 Avenue C North, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at 1:30 p.m.

I beleive the Bus Barns are going out on the West Side of the city by Montgomery, but I would imagine this is what the announcement will be about.

A local developer says the north downtown master plan will reshape Saskatoon’s downtown, and perhaps even shift the core.

“I think the north downtown is going to have an unbelievable impact on the downtown core because most urban cities, there is a huge amount of people living in the core and here that’s never happened because we’ve had an urban sprawl,” said Ken Achs, Midwest president and developer.
