Wow Mississauga is really starting to fill out now. A few sizeable office towers thrown into that mix and you'd think you're actually looking at the downtown core of a major metropolis.

An amalgamation of older municipalities linked by subdivisions that decided to cluster their new downtown around an effing mall is not a city. I'd accept the old town of Port Credit more than the City of Mississauga. It does have a nice skyline though.

And that photo is great, don't usually see that angle.

It does look good in that pic but from most angles it's painfully obvious that this is a skyline where the buildings are spaced out by large unfriendly 6 lane roads surrounding a mall.

Exactly. It has tons of awesome neighborhoods and areas that are fully walkable(such as port credit which was previously mentioned), obviously the downtown isn't, but that doesn't make it less of a city. A city is a status that the municipal government applies for. A good city is a mater of opinion, so what you mean to say is it isn't a good city. Still a city.

Im sure Missisauge is working to be as 'great' as toronto or montreal......lol.

I just hope people can work in Mississauga and live instead of commuting all over the place.

I saw some recent images of the pollution in Beijing and it aint pretty!

I dont get this whole "bash the young city" mentality.

Our cities will evolve organically.

Yeah exactly. And of course many people live and work in Mississauga... it is a major centre for national corporate headquarters. Microsoft Canada, Wal-Mart Canada, and General Electric among others. It has office buildings downtown, just really short crappy ones. They need to start building noticeable offices like Burnaby.

True, but it is fixable. It will take huge amounts of time and money, but it is possible to pedestrianize those 'highways' and to create a street wall. Lots more infill and density, wider sidewalks, a street apron, bike lanes, and street lights every 100-150m will all need to be implemented to make it an urban core. Those towers in a park type developments will need lots of podium additions at the base which might not go over very well, but if Mississauga is to correct passed design mistakes drastic measures like this will need to be taken. Even Square One isn't destined to remain a suburban mall forever.

I'm under no illusions about the huge job ahead, but it's doable. Maybe by 2030, Mississauga could start looking like an urban place???

I think a lot of people who live in Mississauga might actually like its "spaciousness". A lot of people who I know why live in the city enjoy the fact that its easy to drive around it. I am not sure there will be gleams of people looking to redevelop it into another Toronto.

I'm sure you are right, but the pressure on Mississauga to leave its suburban roots behind will get stronger and stronger. Plans are already under way to drastically transform MCC. Locals who want those wide open spaces will likely move to places further on the periphery like Brampton or Milton.

It's a pattern one sees in every city right across the country. As cities grow, they become denser and busier. Those seeking more space end up moving out.
