Unless they are very swift - I walk through there every few days - than you are mistaking D Condo's for Heritage Landing.

3 km squared is very large and spread out for a downtown in a city the size of Winnipeg. I knew it was more spread out than Calgary's downtown, but its over twice the size, area-wise.

For comparison;

Ottawa downtown is about 1.25 km squared,
Calgary downtown is about 1.20-1.30 km squared
San Francisco downtown is about 1.50 km squared
Portland downtown is about 2.58 km squared
Vancouver downtown is about 3.75 km squared
Chicago downtown is about 4.09 km squared

Adding up all of downtown's contributing neighbourhoods using Stats Can for Neighbourhood Area's (Found on the city's website), except for the Legislature, Forks, and P&M, of which there is no population statistics for the city to bother compiling data, and using an Online Google Maps Area Calculator Tool (which proved accurate when contrasting to the city results) for the three excluded neighbourhoods, I came up with a total area of 3.2km squared for Winnipeg's Downtown.

This is considering two things,

a) That South Point Park as well as both rivers are excluded from the calculations.

b) That the city decided to round to the closest 0.1km decibel. For example, Portage-Ellice at 1.8km squared was rounded up to 2km squared, while Broadway-Assiniboine was rounded down from 3.2km squared to 3km squared.

Very impressive, Chris thanks. Confirms the "approximately 3km sq" notion

But it's interesting to see how stark and different Winnipeg's downtown is from other city's officially defined regions.

I couldn't find one for Edmonton nor other prairie cities (Regina, Saskatoon) nor other closer sized markets like Victoria and Halifax, or similar sized cities like Hamilton. Quebec City sort of had two official downtowns so I didn't use that since its a very different city and not comparable on that artificial level.

Interesting numbers... I believe it when people say Winnipeg's downtown is big considering the total city size.

Yeah, Quebec City has its 'old city' and the newer 'downtown' outside the walls (all on top of the hill), and then another lower-level downtown at the base of the hill. Its a really neat place; I'm really fortunate to get to go there often as part of my work (and I fully support the return of the Nordiques!).

I've noticed that the long 'half-finished' strip mall south of McGillvary (with the Canadian Tire, Brick, SCU, etc) has some new construction starting. They are digging away on what looks like either another big box store, or another row of smaller units immediately south of the Brick. Anything interesting confirmed to be going in here storewise? I can't find a site plan anywhere for this development.

The strip mall (apparently named Linden Ridge shopping centre) can be found under "Retail" on this website: http://www.collierscanada.com/en/Offices/Winnipeg/Winnipeg-Listings, but I can't find any sort of site plans. They list up to 80 000 square feet available. I'm guessing that this is the land next to the Brick, and does not include the land adjacent to Kenaston that Wal-Mart used to own.

Yes, its land beside the brick and looks to extend all the way to the existing stripmall (with the subway and M&M).

Hmm... That's interesting. With the development of Seasons of Tuxedo, I hadn't been expecting that land to be developed any time soon (despite the already paved parking lot). I haven't been in that area in a while now, but I'm pretty sure there's also a few empty stores where the Gord's used to be. I can't think of any stores that are really missing from the massive amount of big box stores in that area. If you find any site plans or anything, please be sure to post them here as well.

Yeah, all the expected big box (and little box stores) are more or less in the SW corridor, and the first-store-in-Winnipeg candidates are flocking to Seasons. Will post anything I find.

That's good news. Pretty small but still goood news! The Shark Club is a pretty cool place. I've been to the one in Heritage Meadows here in Calgary. I'm sure having one downtown would be much better! So you guys should love it. So it is directly attached to the MTS centre?

The tavern Vlt's are owned by true north. They have been providing $3m a year to them since mts was built.

I don't understand how this casino is news. Didn't they announce it two years ago? And the shark club thing is hardly speculation anymore. Why is the media so far behind?

The "Gaming room" was announced when the NHL returned I believe. The Shark Club has never been officially announced, hence why the media has nothing on it. Seems reporters these days don't do much digging, spare a few. Unless a press conference is called, they don't know.
