Nice picture again Signal! I see you tackled the southside hills again! I just thought of something: they should leave the vertical part of the crane where it is and it can be a spire for the building! We don't have any buildings with spires

Just look at the last few pictures. It could work

Great photos Signal! While looking at the photos I keep wondering if they will add the "screen" shown in the renderings at the center of the garage facade which greatly enhances it, also why the southwest corner is unfinished?

^ I hoped they might add a spire or something too !

The vertical stripe with no glass is where they pull up all the building materials.

Thanks for pointing that out - that's on the Eastern side.

These were posted in the photo thread, so I've quoted them here:

Just heard on VOCM news to confirm what was posted before about Husky moving into 351. VCOM said they will occupy 2/3 of the building.

Thanks

This is the article JCE mentioned:

Quote:
Husky to get new Downtown Digs:

Husky Energy is going to be the anchor tenant of a new office building going up in downtown St. John's. 351 Water Street is the first building to be heated and cooled by sea water in Newfoundland and Labrador, and is the first new office building downtown in 25 years. Husky will occupy over two-thirds (or 112,000 sq. ft.) of the office tower, which is scheduled for completion in 2014. It will consist of six storeys and include a 445-car parkcade.
One part of that article that stood out to me is that it says it will be completed in 2014. I thought it was supposed to open in the fall of this year.. Oh well. As long as it looks complete, that's what matters the most to me

I think they could have easily found tenants for a building with 3 more floors at this location.

That's correct, originally they said 2013. I guess the exterior will look finished this year, but probably not ready for occupancy until early 2014. The tenants themselves decide on the layouts for their own offices, and may be responsible for finishing the office interiors themselves.

Oh, definitely! I'm sure they could have found tenants for 8 more stories if they built it. Oh well. I'm confident there will be other taller buildings in the future so a shorter 351 will make for a nice contrast

Seems like it's possible to add floors to most buildings after the fact. You never know what might happen in the future.
There is certainly enough parking to accomodate it.

I suppose that's a possibility, and with 5 levels of concrete parking beneath it, I'm sure it is structurally able to support more than 6 stories.

Honestly, I can't see it happening anytime in the next 10 years, but if the need is there sometime in the future, it might be a possibility. You never know what the future brings

Here's something I found in an old CBC article. It shows the evolution of the design of 351. Ultimately, we got the best design

I liked the first two as well, especially the one with the heritage treatment at the bottom, and the final one where they show the restuarant as larger, plus the sloped roof at the top which would have made the building profile more interesting. Other than that, they have stayed true to the concept shown in the renderings.

I'm curious about the extra glass floors they show on the Eclipse building in those renders...

Or is that just to show how tall 351 would be in relation to it?

That building has been approved to build 2 extra floors on to its building, so the extra height of that building is shown in the proposal.

I do think we got the best design overall, though I do like how the parking garage is hidden in the first proposal.
