Perhaps. But Ottawa is just about as perfect an antithesis you could find for a rebellious or revolutionary place.

Yes, but there was a big fight once in the market area where the combatants ripped up the cobbles off the street and threw them at each other. One guy died when he was accidently shot.

The event was called Stoney Monday.

The watering hole called Fat Tuesday (is it still there?) was called Stoney Monday for a long time.

The Ottawa Stoneys would be novel and have an Ottawa connotation.

But I very much still prefer Raftsmen

They would be made fun of as the Ottawa Stoners.

Stoney Monday was a specific event going back to Bytown days but was far from isolated. Bytown was considered the most violent community in North America at the time with ongoing sectarian violence centred on the Byward Market and Sapper's Bridge. A poem was written about the first Bytown fair in 1829 and how the happy event suddenly got out of control. It didn't help that so many lumbermen came to Bytown from the surrounding countryside to have a drunken good time when they were not working in the woods. Old Bytown was filled with seedy hotels, taverns and brothels to satisfy those lumbermen.

I concur.

Bytown, before it was chosen to be Canada's capital, was very much a frontier town in the boonies. Lawlessness was rampant and law was enforced only by calling in the British troops encamped on the Hill.
Most violence involved ethnic conflicts between the English, the Scots, the Irish and the French as well as between Anglicans, Presbyterians, Irish Catholics and Irish Orangemen .

Personal conflicts were usually settled with bare fists at assigned street corners or alleys. These fights were probably part of the entertainment for the locals,

The town's business was lumber and lumbermen and their lumberjacks ruled the streets.

Lumber was hewn in the woods during fall and winter and then driven down streams and rivers and then down the Ottawa River as rafts in the spring and summer by raftsmen. Most of the lumberjacks would have gone home to their farms and family by then but raftsmen may have been mostly single guys or others who were shirking their homesteading and family duties. Before going back to the woods in late summer or fall, some raftsmen would hang around (lots of brothels), drink a lot and presumably indulged in fighting as a pastime.

The name Raftsmen has a pretty rough edge to it and very suitable to a not-so-gentle sport known as football on the north-american continent.

It is equivalent to the "rough riders" of the 19th century rough terrain throughout western North America. That's why Teddy Roosevelt hired a bunch of them, mostly from Texas, to help out with the invasion of Cuba in 1897.

When silent movies came out a decade or so afterwards, these wilderness rough riders were sissied down to "cow boys" riding on open ranges. That's probably because the Hollywood movie studios were mostly in Arizona.

So I think that "Raftsmen" would be an appropriate name for a football team.

Heck, we even have one on the City's Coat of Arms:

Reading the background of the Ottawa coat of arms gives us another name:

The Ottawa Timber Trimmers

Members of Parliament

[QUOTE=Acajack;5976093]Sounds like a bunch of estheticians.[/QUOTE

Commentator Paul Ullrich on Ken Gray's blog thinks that, just like the Ottawa Senators in the NHL, the Ottawa team in the CFL should be called Members of Parliament

Re: Red and Blacks

It just occurred to me that the most logical song for the team would naturally be The ABC Café – Red and Black from Les Miserables. Not sure if they would want to be associated with a musical, but it is certainly a rousing call to arms.

Quote:
Red - the blood of angry men!
Black - the dark of ages past!
Red - a world about to dawn!
Black - the night that ends at last!

My favourite idea so far is Raftsmen.

That said, a few other local names (that probably won't appeal to anyone but a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 local history buff):

Ottawa Lumber Barons
Ottawa Royal Sappers (see - it keeps the all-important "R")

And I've come up with another possibility, but I warn you that it takes some tongue-in-cheek convoluted logic to get there. I hope the ends justify the means:

1) Ottawa should honour local industry in it's name (thus Raftsmen is a cool idea)

2) A current key industry in Ottawa is High Tech

3) In the tech industry, Ottawa is especially recognized for Intellectual Property, with companies such as Wi-Lan, Mosaid, and Maplesoft headquartered here, along with some of the best IP law firms in the country

4) A core concern in intellectual property is the issue of pirated music

Therefore I suggest: The Ottawa Riff Raiders

As soon as you include 'Riff', it makes you think of 'Riff Raff' and given that our team will likely not be very good for a few years, 'Riff Raff' will quickly be pegged to the team. That is something that we want to avoid, a name that can easily made into something derogatory.

I don't like the sound of Ottawa Raftsmen very much... I would rather something like Ottawa Red Raiders
